New Orleans

Dreaming of New Orleans

Jack lived here in the '70s, halfway between Tulane University and the French Quarter. He took the St. Charles Streetcar in both directions from his "shotgun" apartment, and met such poets as Allen Ginsberg and W.S. Merwin during his graduate studies.

We have both visited New Orleans on many occasions, including Christmas, 1996, when we stayed at the Royal Orleans and dined at such restaurants as Tujaques, Mother's, and the Camellia Grill; and again, April 1997, when we stayed at the Fairmont hotel during the AAMC Conference, and visited with K.T. Nachod and friends once again. We also met Carol Mathias and Jack had lunch with her at the Palace Cafe.

We took Mom to New Orleans for Christmas, 1998, when we stayed at the Cornstalk and Monteleone while visiting with Katie and with Justin from South Africa.

Taking the Cake at the Palace Cafe

We returned to the Big Easy February 17-19, 2001 to visit Katie and take in some of the early Mardi Gras celebration. We saw several parades, including Sparta, Carrollton and Barkus and dined at numerous great restaurants, delighting in everything from gumbo to jambalaya, oyster and soft-shell crab po-boys to crawfish Cantonese and crabmeat with roasted beets.

Later in 2001 we took part in Decadence over labor Day weekend with Katie and friends and we returned for the SACS conference in December.(see the Year 2001.)

From 2002-2004, we traveled repeatedly to the Big Easy, including the ARLIS conference in November, 2003. KT joined us for dinners at Antoine's and other sacred eateries. See the individual years for details...

We enjoyed Thanksgiving, 2004 in New Orleans with Starr, Bruce, KT, Dan and KT's family. We had dinner at Tujaques, Oysters, crawfish, shrimp, and crabmeat at the usual culinary palaces, The Gumbo Shop and Acme oyster Bar; saw a fab performance of Tru at the Petite Theatre in the Quarter, saw art in the NOMA sculpture garden, and had a glorious stay at the Biscuit Palace.
