Only a few parts of the castle which was built by King John from 1204 thru 1226 still remain, and these remains have been altered considerably. Todays buildings were mostly built during the 18th and 19th century. From the times of Elisabeth I until the proclamation of the Irish republic in 1921, this was residence of the vice kings and the British administration. |
