Athlone, located approximatlely in the geographical center of the Irish Island,
has always been an important place as this is one of the most important
crossings of the river Shannon. The first bridge we know about was built in the
1st century ad.

In 1210, King John of England ordered the erection of Athlone Castle, aka King John's Castle. In the 19th century, the castle received its current appearance. Today, the complex houses a visitor center and a small museum. |
