...playing soccer in Germany? | |||||||||
you can't be alone! | |||||||||
I know, I know. As improbable as it may be, I have a soccer-playing German-speaking friend who claims of its possibility. At first I was nervous that I would arrive at such a situation without the "mad German skills" (yes, that was a Loomerism) that I would need, but my friend said that he would be happy to translate a few phrases that are said at every soccer game into the German language. Out of the kindness of my heart, I've decided to share these... Stop! You, in the uniform -- not you, you! Halte! Du, in die Uniform -- nicht du, du! Die, English pig-dog! Sterben Englisch schwein-hund! Get some glasses, Ref. Referent! Probier eine brille. That was a dive! Das war eine tauchen! Is your head OK? Ist deinen topf OK? ["OK is universal the world over" is what he said. bah.] Is the Bookie still open? Ist der Buchmacher immer noch offen? How much is the Beer? Wie kauft das Bier? He claims that they translate with "a minnimum or grammatic hassles," but many of these look suspiciously English-like. I know that English is a Germanic language, so I shouldn't be worried, but I always get embarrased when something is posted wrong. So, if you speak German, you know what's right to do. |
