Touring with a large group or family can be one of the most fun things you have ever done or a HUGE disaster! I myself have 4 kids so I have the large family thing under control. However, I love to share the 'magic' of Disney with my friends and family. So most of the time we have others joining us well on vacation. This past winter I toured with 2 of my best childhood friends and their families, 17 of us in total, and we had a BLAST!!!!!!
(I'll be adding pictures of that very soon). Anyways, heres some things that I have learned that will help make your trip a sucess.
1. Make a plan for LOSING and MEETING member/members of your party(we have never lost a child, it's the adults that tend to wander off-lol). Have a set meeting place at each park, everyone should know this place, also point it out -like the statue of Mickey and Walt in front of the castle on Main St. Or we like to use the snack bar under the Star Jets in Tomorrow Land because it is near some of the rides and we can get a snack well we wait. If you say your meeting at 9am it is possible that someone maybe late (b/c of buses or whatever) so I like to say we wait 5 min then check back at the same spot 1 hour later. This really helps people from getting mad that "my, I'm here and can't do anything!" at the same time takes the pressure of those trying to meet you. You can go visit an attraction or two depending on the crowds, then go back to the meeting spot. Now a lost child is MUCH different! Make sure your child knows the hotel that you stay in (give older kids the phone# and room # -they can call and leave message) also point out what CM's(cast members) look like and have your lost child head right to one. You do the same! They can put a lost child call out ALL through the park, every CM in the park will be on the lookout.
2. This is what really will make your large group touring work. Don't try and tour with the whole group every second of every day!!!One of the hardest things to do in a large group is keep everyone happy. Some people are 'earlybirds' others just can't get going. To settle this we meet up at lunch time and tour togeather at a slower pace in the afternoon). I know this goes against my take a break after lunch tip, but that could also be your afternoon activity, y'all could go swimming and relax by the pool well the kids play. Touring World Showcase in Epcot works out well, try to stay away from really crowded things. If in the MK go to things like the Tiki Birds, Country Bear, Pirates of the Carb., Hall of Pres., you've got the idea. Do your speed touring of the most popular rides in your smaller groups.
3. Trying to plan a meal togeather? Well WDW has a large group dining resv. office. You call the normal PS resv. line(407-WDW-DINE) then they will connect you. You have to hold the table with a credit card, and if you skip it they will chare you $10 or $15 per person.
4. "Is everybody happy?" Well that is a hard thing to do, especially with my large family and kids ages 2 to 14. So before we go we make our plan, and I ask each child what is really important for them to do. We all get to pick one thrill ride -like Test Track (you can spend a long time in line on some of these), a place to eat, and maybe a show or non-thrill ride. I then work this into the plan over the length of our trip.. Every knows that before the leave they will do that special ride.
