LIMITED EXPRESS IN HOKKAIDO AND TOHOKU







Hokkaido Area

Trains are designed to run in severe cold winter weather. Most lines are not electrified except central Hokkaido area around Sapporo, and many limited express trains are DMU type.

Type 785 (20KB) Type 785 EMU, 'Super White Arrow' between Sapporo and Asahikawa, Hokkaido.
Maximum speed 130 km/h.
Running through large field in Hokkaido, this train is one of the fastest Limited Express in Japan.

Tohoku Area

In Tohoku area, northern Honshu, major limited express services going direct to Tokyo have changed to Shinkansen high speed trains. Branch services are provided by some conventional limited express trains.


Type 751 'Tsugaru' between Hachinohe and Aomori, connected with Tohoku Shinkansen 'Hayate'.


Type 485 'Inaho' from Niigata to Akita, connected with Joetsu Shinkansen services.


Type 583 (12KB) Type 583 EMU is unique because it can be used both for overnight sleeper and daytime train. Now many are abolished and some run as seasonal trains. This picture is seasonal overnight express 'Hakuturu' in Ueno station bound for Aomori.

Express 'Kitaguni' (Osaka - Niigata, Hokuriku line) is now the only case in which type 583 train runs as a regular train.
