LIMITED EXPRESS IN SHIKOKU AND KYUSHU


Shikoku Area


Limited express 'Ishizuchi' from Takamatsu to Matsuyama, type 8000 EMU tilt train. Most limited express trains in Shikoku Island are now operated by tilt train.



Type 2000 'Uzushio' from Takamatsu to Tokushima.
This DMU 2000 also has tilt system, and its first version was produced in 1989.
It is the first DMU tile train in Japan, and contributed to get trains in mountainous lines faster.




Kyushu Area



Left: Type 883 tilt EMU, Right: Type 885 tilt EMU.
Both are used in 'Sonic' limited express from Hakata to Oita.


Limited express 'Yufuin no Mori' from Hakata to Beppu via Yufuin in central Kyushu, famous spa and mountain resort.
It has observation seat and impressive green body to attract many tourists who enjoy slow but interesting train travel across Kyushu Island.



Overnight train 'Sakura' between Tokyo and Nagasaki.
'Sakura' (cherry) is national flower of Japan, and limited express 'Sakura' has long history since 1929.
But now long distance overnight train in Japan is not popular because of the extension of much faster air and Shinkansen, and at last traditional 'Sakura' is abolished in 2005.
