From Tokyo to Narita International Airport (about 70 km)




1 JR Limited Express train ('Narita Express'): The fastest

Time: 1:00 (Tokyo central - Narita Airport), 1:20 (Shinjuku - Narita Airport)
Fare (one way): 2,940 yen (Tokyo central - Narita Airport)
Japan Rail Pass is valid to both services.

'Narita Express' is the most convenient train service to Narita Airport, but fairly expensive for only 80 kilometers' short journey.

It runs through to Tokyo central station, western sub centers Shinjuku, Ikebukuro and Shinagawa, also Omiya and Yokohama. This express runs through to many important centers in Tokyo metropolitan area without taking the trouble of changing trains carrying large suitcase.

'Narita Express' runs every 30 - 60 minutes, not so frequent.

When going from Tokyo to Airport, it is better to make reservation. You can get on train when seats are occupied, but have to pay same expensive fare even if you stand in aisle. And if 'Aisle ticket' is sold out, you cannot get on the train because 'Narita Express' does not have non-reserved cars.


2 JR local train (Rapid 'Airport Narita')

Time: 1:30 (Tokyo central - Narita Airport)
Fare (one way): 1,280 yen (Tokyo central - Narita Airport)

It runs through to Chiba, Tokyo central station, Shinagawa and Yokohama. This service is slow, but more expensive than following Keisei local trains.

Local train runs every one hour. They are used by local passengers, local commuters. Seats are not confortable like limited express, and often fairly congested. When going from Airport to city, you will get seat because airport is the first station. But going from Tokyo to airport, you are likely to stand carrying large baggage.


3 Keisei Sky Liner

Time: 1:00 (Ueno - Narita Airport)
Fare (one way): 1,920 yen

'Narita It runs between Airport and Ueno station. Confortable and fast services, and cheaper than JR Narita Express. But Ueno is not very convenient place to access, especially from western Tokyo.

If you transfer Keisei and JR Yamanote line, it is better to get off in Nippori Station. In Ueno, JR station and Keisei station is a bit far from each other.

It runs every 40 minutes. It does not carry non-reserved cars and you cannot take Skyliner when seats are occupied, better to make reservation.


4 Keisei local train: The cheapest

Time: 1:20 (Ueno - Narita Airport), 2:00 (Haneda Airport - Narita Airport)
Fare (one way): 1,000 yen (Ueno - Narita Airport)

Keisei Limited express also runs between Airport and Ueno station, some of them goes through to Toei subway line, Ginza, Shinagawa then Haneda Airport, hub of domestic airlines in Japan, without going to Ueno. Even trains which do not go Haneda Airport connects those for Haneda in Aoto station on the way.

They are used by local passengers and facilities are not confortable. But many budget travellers choose this service because it is the cheapest. It also is the most convenient when going from Narita Airport to Haneda Airport. Bus is faster, but not punctual.



5 Airport Limousine Bus: Run direct to many destinations

Time: 1:00 (TCAT - Narita Airport), 1:20 (Tokyo central station -Narita Airport),
1:30 (Shinjuku - Narita Airport), 1:15 (Haneda Airport - Narita Airport)

Fare (one way): 2,900 - 3,000yen (Tokyo - Narita Airport)

Bus runs direct to TCAT (Tokyo City Air Terminal), many large high grade hotels in central Tokyo, and many suburban centers in Tokyo metropolitan area. TCAT locates in Hakozaki and a few minutes' walk from Suitengu Mae station, Eidan Subway Hanzomon Line.

Services to TCAT runs every 10 minutes. They can delay a lot when caught in traffic jam, which is the major disadvantage of bus services compared with punctual trains.
