SOLAR BOAT MUSEUM

This is a model of the boat (about 6 feet long), when you walk into the museum. When you enter the museum, you have to wear slippers over top of your shoes that are supplied for you, so that no sand or other contaminates get into the building that is also temperature controlled.

The boat is 142 feet long and it was found in 1954. It was disassembled and placed in the pit in 1224 pieces, comprising 656 major parts of the ship.

This is the deckhouse, and you can see how well the wood has survived.

The back of the boat, which has been made to look like a papyrus stalk (as well as the front), represents the way boats were made out of papyrus in predynastic times (before 3100 bc).
