The famous unfinished obelisk. If completed, this one would have been the tallest one in Egypt at 42 meters and 1150 tons. It was never completed because of cracking that occured while quarrying it, so they just left it.
This is an example of the method they used for quarrying stone. They would cut these notches in a line, jam wood blocks into them and soak them with water. When the wood expanded, the stone would split along the notches, making it easier for the workers to remove the entire block in a single piece. This was the method used trying to extract the obelisk in the previous photo.
