Originally this area was called Menufer, but the Greeks changed it to Memphis and the name stuck from then on. The city where Phoenicians, Judeans, Armenians, Greeks, Libyans, Sudanese, and others each had their own areas. The decline began with the creation of Alexandria to the north. and by the 4th century A.D. it was already in complete ruin. Nothing is left today.
An alabaster sphinx of the pharoah Amenophis The Second. It once stood outside the temple of Ptah and is 4.5 meters high and 8 meters long.
Not sure who this pharoah is. A very nice statue though.
This is the building that houses the giant statue of Ramses The Second. It was donated to England in the 19th century, but the British couldn't figure out how to get it home with them, so they left it and it lays here to this day. Which is good, because I believe these things should stay in Egypt.
This is a good black and white photo showing some of the detail. In my mind, this is the most beautiful statue in the country.
