This is from the tomb of Merneptah (KV-8). He was one of the sons of Ramesses The Great. There were some beautiful hieroglyphs here in this one. This is of the god Ra-Harakhte. It is located on a wall near the entrance. The colors survived very well, as did most of the tombs here.
This is in the large pillared room at the end of the tomb of Merneptah. This is just the lid of an inner sarcophagus that held his body. There would be an even larger one that would contain this one, all cut from single blocks of stone.
The guy with the hat is the famous archeologist Kent Weeks, paying his workers. He is currently working on "KV-5", which is a giant tomb he discovered in the late 1980's. It probably contained mostly all of the 50 sons of Ramses The Second. So far, there has been over a hundred rooms uncovered. It is by far the largest tomb in the valley. If you want to know more about this tomb, I suggest picking up the excellent book he just recently published.
This is his wife Susan Weeks, who is busy sorting pottery shards that have been found in the tomb that day. She is also probably numbering them so they can be catalogued later on. I would have loved to have said hi to them, but I'm sure that they get bothered by enough people while they are trying to do their work. What a dream job that would be!!
