Largo, MD--Adventure World is set to join the ranks of America's favorite regional theme parks as plans were announced today for major capital improvements leading up to the opening of the new Six Flags America on May 1, 1999. Construction begins this week on more than $27 million in new rides, shows and attractions.
Adventure World is one of four parks owned by Premier Parks Inc. announcing plans today to apply the Six Flags brand.
"In terms of worldwide brand name recognition and attendance, Six Flags is second only to Disney," stated Kieran Burke, chairman and CEO of Premier Parks. "Following our acquisition of Six Flags earlier this year, we began a careful evaluation of our existing parks to determine which ones had the potential to deliver a true Six Flags experience. Our long-term investment in Adventure World has transformed it into a first- class regional attraction. It delivers the high guest relations and operational standards necessary to earn the right to fly the Six Flags brand name."
Since acquiring the park in 1991, Premier Parks has invested more than $50 million in Adventure World. "Adding state-of-the-art rides and attractions, creating an exciting level of family entertainment has allowed this park to experience unprecedented attendance growth. The number of guests enjoying the park's amenities has more than tripled over the past five years," noted Janet Porter, Adventure World's general manager.
The overall entertainment product at the new Six Flags America will be greatly expanded and enhanced as a result of today's announcement, Porter said. The company's exclusive theme park licensing rights in the United States to the world-famous Looney Tunes animated characters and DC Comics super heroes will mean that Bugs Bunny, Yosemite Sam, Tweety, Daffy Duck, Batman and other Wamer Bros. cartoon characters will be seen frequently throughout the new Six Flags America park.
WELCOME TO MAIN STREET, USA
A beautiful new front gate plaza and Main Street top the list of improvements for 1999. The all-new entrance will include expanded ticket outlets, widened gates, lavish landscaping and enhanced guest services. Stepping through the park gates, visitors will feel as if they have been transported back in time to the bicentennial era. Cobblestone streets lead to welcoming colonial buildings with wrought iron gates and shuttered windows filled with enticing new shopping and dining options. Retail offerings include a Looney Tunes Movie Store, Totally Tweety, and Six Flags Kids.
YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SCREAMING!
High-speed thrill seekers will find two awesome new roller coasters - both debuting on the East Coast for the first time in 1999. The DC Comics themed LIM (linear induction motor) coaster, The Joker's Jinx, blasts riders from 0-63 mph in just over three seconds. This 500 ton steel maze stretches 2,705 feet of twisting, turning track through 30 vertical curves, 25 horizontal curves and four upside down loops. A deviously convoluted ride, The Joker's Jinx promises to keep passengers guessing (and screaming) for the full 90 second ride!
For those who want to look terror in the eyes, the suspended inverted steel coaster trade named INVERTIGO offers just that opportunity - twice! Seated in unique face-to-face coaches, riders are pulled up a 137-foot lift and dropped, flying 55 mph, back down the lift shooting up into a "boomerang" double inverted side-winder. After returning to an upright position, passengers are thrust head on into a 72 foot high vertical loop before rocketing to the top of a second 137-foot lift. Riders have just enough time to catch their breath before the train is released, propelling them through the entire ride again in the opposite direction. The exciting ride has just been added to Six Flags America's list of coming attractions for 1999 and has yet to be named.
BATMAN THRILL SPECTACULAR
A new Gotham City themed area will feature The Joker's Jinx coaster along with a "Batman Thrill Spectacular" stunt show. The famous cast includes Batman, The Penguin and Catwoman in an explosive non-stop action adventure. High-speed chases, motorcycle stunts, high dives and pyrotechnics keep visitors on the edge of their seats as Batman struggles to save the citizens of Gotham City.
"WHAT'S UP, DOC?"
Kids of all ages can look forward to the family style 50s musical "What's up Rock!" featuring Bugs Bunny, Sylvester, Daffy Duck, the Tasmanian Devil and Foghorn Leghorn. The new Looney Tunes Movie Town play area will feature the Foam Factory interactive children and adult soft play area with foam balls, slides and more.
A cast of five Looney Tunes characters will stroll through the park each day to sign autographs and pose for pictures. Reservations will be accepted at the Carrot Club Cafe for lunch or dinner with the "stars."
"The opening of Six Flags America will have a tremendous positive impact on local tourism, elevating the park's stature as a major regional attraction," Porter exclaimed. "The expanded entertainment package gives people everywhere a reason to visit the Mid-Atlantic. These changes represent the culmination of years of improvement and growth at this park. We are truly grateful for the support of the local community and look forward to delivering the ultimate in family fun and thrills!"
Six Flags America is owned by Premier Parks Inc., the world's largest regional theme park company with 31 parks, including parks serving nine of the 10 largest metropolitan areas in the United States and six locations in Europe.
