KARGIL CONFLICT MAY 8 1999 - JULY 14 1999

My 1999 trip to Pakistan almost had to be canceled when a group of Kashmiri Freedom Fighters, Mujehideen and a sprinkling of Pakistani Army regulars slipped from the frozen heights of  the Himalaya Pakistani controlled Kashmir into Indian held Kashmir along the Kargil region. This sneaky maneuver really upset India and so the war began! I followed the progression of the battles very closely on the net and came to the conclusion that when I was going to be there, the war was either going to  explode into chaos or end. I was hoping for an end, so I decided to go on my trip with my escape route planned through eastern Afghanistan. The conflict ended July 14 1999 - five days after I had arrived.

Below are two of many stickers given to me at a Mujehideen booth in Peshawar.
