Roland Garros!
13th seeded Elena is has advanced to the second round, due to take place today, last match on Court 16. She won her first round match against Adriana Gersi 7-5, 6-3 and her next match will be against Asa Svensson. She is also entered in Doubles competition with Janette Husarova
Finals flash!
Elena wins doubles!
Elena and her partner Lina Krasnosyskaya defeated their opponents Coetzer/Tong
in the doubles final of the Hong Kong Challenge yesterday in straight
sets, 6-1, 6-3. She was happy, having won the title after losing the singles
to Jennifer Capriati. Hope her brilliant form continues for the WTA tournament
in Sydney and then the big Grand Slam, the Aussie Open! ^_^
Elena lost her finals
match in Hong Kong 6-1, 4-6, 4-6. She was the dominant player throughout,
however, she showed fatigue with her right arm towards the end of the
match. She led for a time in both the second and the third set. It was,
however, a great display of tennis from our hero and confidence boosting
for the tennis season ahead. We'll support you, Elena! ^_*
Elena in finals!
Mary Pierce of France retired in her match yesterday after losing the
first set 6-1, giving Elena a spot in the finals with world #2 Jennifer
Capriati. Elena is also still in contention in the doubles field, where
she and her partner Krasnoroutskya will play Amanda Coetzer and local
favourite Tong Ka Po.
Elena overpowered
Tamarine Tanasugran of Thailand in 3 sets in the Hong Kong Challenge yesterday.
5-7, 6-4, 6-4. It was her first match on the year, and in a post match
interview, she said she was pleased with her play. I was there to watch
the match (hehe...my first time seeing Elena in person) and although the
match was tough (very nerve-wrecking for me...I didn't want to see her
lose the first time I saw her!) She was 3-0 down in the second set and
also 3-1 down in the third, but managed to overcome this and play her
way back into the tournament with brillant groundstrokes and occasional
drop shots. She also fired 4 aces. As a fan, I had a very good time. The
woman behind me was cheering for Tamarine and so when I was clapping and
going "Yes!!! Go Elena!" she was going "Noo.....".
^_^. I managed to get her autograph and some pics and I will post them
up asap!
Yippeee...my favourite
time of the year...1st comes Christmas, then new year, then Elena in Hong
Kong...hehe...
She is seeded 3rd
in the event and will play Tamarine Tanasugarn (Thailand) on the 3rd of
January. She is also playing doubles with Krasnoroutkaya and they are
to play Tamarine Tanasugarn and Angelique Widjaja (Wimbledon junior champ)
in the first round.
Here is an interview
I translated from the local newspaper. Please
do not copy this onto your site but link it instead because I spent lots
of time translating it!
"Speaking of
Russian tennis players, most people would only remember the beautiful
Anna Kournikova, but the Hong Kong tennis challenge (which commences Jan
2) brings us a new surprise, a girl who is younger than Anna Kournikova,
a girl who is ranked higher than Anna Kournikova, and last but not least,
a girl who is just as pretty as Anna!
(Q: Journalist A:Elena
Dementieva)
Q: The media's attention
is often focused on Anna, do you feel jealous at times?
A: (Smiling) Of course not, Anna and I are good friends, and I feel proud
of her success. Q: You too, possess a pretty face, will you follow Anna's
suit and pursue a career in the show business?
A: I don't have such plans at the moment, I just want to focus on tennis.
Q:Your year-end world ranking is rising quickly, and you are now the best
Russian player on the WTA tour, but you still choose to practise and train
in Moscow. Is there something special about practising in Moscow?
A: I've been practising there all my life, and I think my secret weapon
to success is my mother, she often watches me play, and supports me.
Q: Did she come to Hong Kong this time?
A: Of course! (Big laugh), I think she is now sleeping in the hotel room.
If I have time after the tournament, I will go shopping and sight-seeing
with her around Hong Kong.
Q: What goals do you have in 2002?
A: I hope to break into the top 5, because that is a feat that has never
been accomplised by a Russian tennis player.
Q: Which male tennis player do you currently think is the sexiest?
A: (blushing) I like Rios, I think is long hair is attractive.
Q: Have you any hopes for the new year?
A: First, I would like to play better tennis, and be able to spend more
time with my family, because I often spend time away from home and I miss
them.
"Many people compare me to Anna Kournikova. I don't
think she's that special, maybe she lives in America, and her exposure
to media is greater. I am more well known in Russia"
