MY WORK, MY CAREER, AND MY COMPANY

A  tribute and salute to USAirways, Inc.

Boeing 737-300 in Montreal, Quebec

I work as a Fleet Service Agent (ramp agent) for USAirways at Fort Lauderdale/
Hollywood/Dania Beach International Airport in Florida (FLL). I just started my
17th year with USAirways in October, 1999, and I love the job. I still go to work
every day with the enthusiasm as if it was my first week. It's a feeling I hope
never goes away, but as you've learned about me already, I have "airplanes on
the brain". Put me near a jet airliner, and I'm happy.

A brand new A319 right out of
the Airbus factory in Hamburg.
The tails are prepainted as
they are aerodynamically
balanced surfaces and must be
figured in to the aerodynamic
qualities of the unpainted air-
plane. Pretty high-tech, huh??

MetroJet by USAirways is what's called an "airline within an airline". While it is set apart
from the USAirways "mainline" operation, Metrojet customers enjoy the same services as
all other passengers, by the same USAirways ground and inflight staff. The big difference
between the two, is fares. Metrojet aircraft are configured in an all-coach design, allowing
us to offer fares on Metrojet that are among the lowest in the industry.

I was hired by USAir in 1984 as a part time Customer Service Agent (Passenger
Services) in Cleveland, Ohio by then-Station Manager Ralph Cox. After working for
2 years in Passenger Services as a part time agent, I transferred to the ramp as
a full time Fleet Service Agent (
please don't call us baggage handlers!!). I was
promoted in 1989 to the position of Shift Supervisor in Wichita, Kansas, and six
months later was promoted again to the position of Station Manager. I remained in
Wichita for 13 months. The Company then moved me to Kansas City as a Shift
Supervisor, anticipating to move me to another city as a Station Manager within
six months. On my own accord, I voluntarily went back to the agent group as a
Fleet Service Agent in 1992, which is where I remain today. I transferred to
Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood/Dania Beach International Airport on December 15, 1997.
I feel very priveleged to work for such a company as USAirways. Our corporate
leadership in the person of Stephen Wolf, Chairman, and Rakesh Gangwal, President
and CEO, are very interested in getting all people involved in building our airline.
Many changes over the past few years, from the introduction of the MetroJet
brand, to redesigning our Passenger Services strategy, has been the work of
employee task forces under the direction of Mr. Gangwal. This is a people skill
that - unfortunately - is not used in many corporate cultures today.

The USAirways Fleet

Past, present, and near future

The Boeing 727-200 (Advanced) was the "Queen of the
Fleet" for USAir for many years, it being the largest air-
craft we operated. Here is a 727 pushing back in Pittsburgh
wearing USAir's paint scheme, circa. 1970s-1980's. I miss
this old paint scheme (nicknamed "The three Reds"
scheme, by many). This aircraft type has recently been
retired from the USAirways fleet.
See the Aircraft and Airlines page for more information
on the 727-200.
