DIVISION CREEK REST STOP
Ten miles north of Independence you’ll find another of those nice rest areas provided by Cal-Trans complete with a sanitary dump station and water to top of your tank. I did not see any signs saying: "NO OVERNIGHT PARKING" so I assume it’s all right.

MOUNT WHITNEY FISH HATCHERY

But at Mount Whitney Fish Hatchery, now closed for remodeling, there are plenty of "NO CAMPING" signs. The grounds, however, are still open to the public. The beautiful lake and garden make this a perfect spot for a picnic.

BIG PINE

After going through the town of Big Pine where you’ll find several inexpensive county-run campgrounds (under $10) our next stop will be.

KEOCH HOT SPRINGS

Less than a mile off the highway is this small oasis. Again, "NO CAMPING" signs all over the place. The property belongs to L.A.County but you’re allowed to take a dip in the wading pools. The temperature of the water is like that of a giant bath tub. Once more, a slice of paradise just for the taking and it is FREE !

Continue west a few hundred yards on the gravel road and you will come to a private campground. Complete with swimming pool and hot tubs and prices to match all this luxury. Dry camping sets you back $16.00 per night while a full hook-up space costs $19.00
If you make use of the pool or spa it will cost you an extra $7.00
