This is the battleship the USS Missouri.
These large guns held shells that were 16 inches in diameter. The
USS missouri was built during World War 2, and was also used in the Korean
War. After that it was decommissioned for over 20 years. However,
in 1991 it was recommissioned for use in the Gulf War.
The USS Missouri was where the Japanese
signed the surrender agreement for World War 2. The picture on the
top is the spot on the deck where the surrender was signed and on the bottom
is the plaque on the wall commemorating it.
This is a view of the Arizona Memorial from
the desk of the USS Missouri.
If you look down from the memorial onto
the sunken ship USS Arizona, this is what you'll see. The above water
rusting cylinder in the picture is the remains of one of the gun turrets.
This is the remains of the USS Utah, a lesser
known casualty of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The USS Utah was a
training ship that held 58 people when Pearl Harbor was attacked.
The memorial for the USS Utah, on the other
side of Ford Island from the USS Arizona, is the hardest to find place
in all of Hawaii.
In fact, this is the only sign on the WHOLE
island for the USS Utah Memorial, notice that it is only 100 yards from
the ship.
