HISTORICAL DATA

 

The ancient Megareis appreciating the strategic meaning of the area since this was the the road which connected Megara with Thiva, they established two cities-ports. They build the first city on the foot of "Kithairon" mountain and named it "Aigosthena". They built the second a littlebit southern, on the foot of "Pateras" mountain and named it "Pagais". On the remains of thiw second city Alepochori Village haw been built.

We find reports for this city in Pausanias's book "Description of Greece" (§1.44.4, §9.19.2) and Stravona's book " Geography" (§8.1.3, §8.6.22, §9.1.2, §9.2.1, §9.2.25).

Indicative, Paysanias reports that in the city there was a bronze statue of Goddess Diana, similar to the one that existed in Megara and also a temple-monument of Aigialos, son of Adrastos, whom hiw relatives carried and buried there, when the last got killed in the second expedition of Argides against Theves.

Stravon gives mostly geographical information.

Today, after the excavations taken place, archaeologists have found the citabel of Pagai a few hundred meters long from the center of Alepochori and a temple next of the seaside road of Alepochori  - Aigirouses.
