The Garden District

One of the sights that Michele wanted to make sure we took in was the Garden District. She enjoys looking at houses and had heard much about the large estates in the Garden District of New Orleans. So the five of us took a trolley from in front of our hotel to the corner of Washington and St. Charles Avenue. From there we walked about a block to a small mall that has an Anne Rice store in it that Sydelle wanted to check out.

Following that we took in the sights of the Lafayette No. 1 Cemetery. Since we were strolling along at our own pace, and not on a guided tour, we did not get the opportunity to learn much about the interesting history that I am sure this cemetery has. What we were able to discover from eavesdropping on one of the many tour guides that were there at the same time was that this was the cemetery in which parts of Easy Rider were filmed. It was that movie that closed the public cemeteries from further movie usage due to the lack of respect shown the dead in the film. Or something like that. Mind you, however, that Michele swears she heard the tour guide from our cemetery tour say the same thing about the St. Louis No. 1 Cemetery, so who knows?

The remainder of our walk through the Garden District proved to be rather disappointing. There were a number of large houses that we could see, but the lots on which they were situated tended to be small in comparison to the houses. Michele had in mind not the plantations, I don't think, but still more sprawling grounds around these homes.

If there was any part of the trip that really disappointed both of us, this would be it. Maybe we were in the wrong section, however, because we have talked to some other people who have been there, and what they describe is more along the lines of what we expected but did not see. Next time maybe we'll have to take one of those horse drawn carriage tours.
