Michele and I at Emeril's
Glenn and Sydelle at Emeril's
Mother's

On the way to the Swamp Tour, Patrick, our driver, pointed out to Michele and I one of New Orleans' most famous restaurants: Mother's, home of the world's best ham. On the way back we had him drop us and two other passengers off there so we could partake of some lunch. The two other passengers were a lady and her niece, who were visiting New Orleans to find a prom dress for the niece. They were very nice and we had ended up chatting with them the whole drive back from the swamp, and then shared a table with them at the crowded Mother's. We also ended up running into them later that night on Bourbon Street and people-watched with them for a good hour or so.

But back to Mother's. Michele had what she swears was the best sandwich she has ever tasted, a shrimp po' boy. I, feeling adventurous, opted for that world's best ham on a po' boy. And it was quite tasty, I have to admit. Another recommended stop for anyone heading to New Orleans.

Mother's was not the best meal we had while we were there, however. Glenn and Sydelle had made reservations for the five of us at Emeril's for Thursday night. The place is so fancy that I actually had to bring some nice clothes, including a jacket, in order to get in! But let me tell you, it was worth the hassle.

We got dressed up all fancy and walked the roughly eight blocks from our hotel to the restaurant and waited just briefly while they got our table ready (we thoroughly embarassed Michele by taking a couple of pictures inside the restaurant while we waited). We then sat down and perused the menu. I even asked for the wine list and was completely overwhelmed by my choices therein. I finally asked for the waiter to suggest a merlot that I could get by the glass and he brought me a sample of two very nice options, one from Italy and one from somewhere else. I opted to go for the one from Italy and tried to make myself remember what it was, but I cannot. All I know is that the bottle said "Red" in big letters on it and was not a merlot. It was quite good, though.

Michele and I split a shrimp appetizer that was absolutely marvelous (she has since pulled the recipe off the internet, but we have yet to try it). She then enjoyed a fish dish, Glenn had the roasted duck and I dined on a delightful filet mignon. Not the best filet I have ever had, but in the top three or four. For dessert Michele and I were supposed to share a chocolate and peanut butter pie, but I ended up focusing my attentions on the chocolate souffle that Glenn had ordered for the table to share.

This was truly one of the better meals that I have had, and it was not as outrageously priced as we expected it to be. Even with dessert it only came to about $60 per person.
