- In Budapest:
- Nokia has a basketball club in Budapest. Our (extremely amateur) team is
playing in the
Cégliga series.
We received a bronze medal in Spring 2001 and finished 4th in Autumn 2001
- In Helsinki:
- Although I moved back to Hungary at the end of 1999, the Nokia (NRC) team
in Helsinki continues to play in the
TEA series.
My leave has obviously strengthened them as their results improved: they
finished 5th in the
2000-01 season.
Perhaps one day they will make it to the Final Four!
- The girls in Pécs:
- At the moment
MiZo Pécs seem to be the best women team in Hungary based on their
records. They are the Hungarian Champions. They have also been rather
successful in international competitions recently: they have reached
the quarterfinals of the
FIBA EuroLeage
for four consecutive years and made it to the Final Four in 2000/2001:
unfortunately they lost their semifinal match against the subsequent winner
and they finished 3rd. Maybe this year...
- The girls in Sopron:
-
EuroLeasing Orsi Sopron is the other team representing Hungary in
FIBA EuroLeage: they have also been regular participants of the
quarterfinal for four years. Still, they are somewhat behind Pécs and they are
probably not very happy about it: they want to be the best. The Sopron-Pécs
rivalry adds special spice to the Hungarian women basketball scene but I think
both teams (and we all) benefit from this special competition. Sopron also won
Ronchetti Cup in 1998.
