A SHRINE TO SALMIAKKI
I just could not have a web-page with out mentioning Salmiakki...
Salmiakki is an absolutely delicious Finnish drink which I was first introduced to in 1997. It is black, salty,peppery and strong. You make it by adding the boiled Salmiakki candy to straight Vodka, and let the candy dissolve in it. Then presto! you have Salmiakki.
Sari Heino from Finland first introduced me to the drink in 1997, but left for Finland only a few months later. Since then I have had to rely on her kindly sending special packets to New Zealand. Twice a year I get together with my "Salmiakki Buddy" - Michelle Wong- at AIESEC conferences and we savour our liquid gold.
I have been lucky enough to have some Salmiakki in Singapore thanks to a Finnish friend, Anna..
It is an extremely potent drink, and very much an accquired taste - few people actually like it! There is a special way to drinking it - you do it in shots, and the second you have done a shot you shout "Huh" whilst doing the appropiate hand signal - like you are pulling on a truck's horn!
