Insurance.
After the events of September 11th 2001, Insurance is no longer an option, it is an absolute necessity.
A good travel insurance comes in the form a package and should include the following:
Baggage is normally an optional extra. The cover is intended mainly for gifts and other item you may purchase whilst over seas. High value items such as camera and jewelry should be covered by you householder's all risk policy.
Medical cover: The minimum amount of cover you should consider is R1,000,000.00. Although this may sound excessive, keep in mind the weak Rand and that you will pay medical cost in the currency of the country where the treatment takes place.
Credit cards: You receive free travel insurance when purchasing you air ticket by credit card. Make sure to check what you are covered for - these policies are normally not very comprehensive and carry a high excess. See you travel agent for a top up policy
.Medical Aids
: Some medical aids now cover their members for foreign travel. Again, check what is covered and how claims may be made. If you can only claim on your return to South Africa, rather purchase a travel insurance policy from you travel agent.
