This photo was taken in February 1999. The dark flat lines on the surface of the sea are floating oyster rafts. The raised lump in the middle is actually the turret of a Japanese submarine on maneuvers. Kure has a navy base for the Japanese Self Defence Force, and Etajima has a Naval training academy.
