This is a large modern incinerator on Osakikamijima. It is used
to efficiently burn refuse from the surrounding area. Japan has
a very dense population on it's limited usable land area, so that
creates problems with waste disposal. Some deserted islands in
the inland sea have been mined for concrete production and then
used as landfill sites. Traditionally many islanders have burned
the majority of their waste in small fires on the beach. It is
not uncommon to see lots of these smoky fires as you travel around
an island. The government is trying to modernise attitudes to
waste disposal, especially on the mainland, and with some success.
Since signing a limited agreement on Dioxins at the Kyoto environmental
conference, many of Japan's small local incinerators; there used
to be one in every school, have been closed and amalgamated. Still
there is a long way to go. |
