Japan has thousands of both Buddhist Temples and Shinto Shrines. It is easy to distinguish between the 2 types, as shrines are painted a vivid red/orange color, as you can see here. Most Japanese people visit both Shrines and Temples particularly at traditional times of the year such as New Year and the 'Obon' in August.
