Short History of Kelantan

Kelantan has existed as a political entity for over a thousand years.Prehistoric remains of stone age men have been found at Gua Cha,Gua Musang etc.The State was converted to Islam during the 15th century and the modern sultanate can trace its origins back to this period.

Kelantan enjoyed a long period of autonomy after the fall of Malacca Sultanate but was affected by the relentless pressure of Thailand and neighbouring Patani.

By the beginning of 19th century,Kelantan was the most populous in the Peninsular,but its politics was dominated by the Thais and Malays of Terengganu.By 1900 Kelantan was recognised as a tributary state of Thailand.In 1909,as a result of a treaty between Thailand and Britain,the overlordship of Kelantan was assumed by the British.

Kota Bharu was the site for the first landing of Japanese troops in the Peninsula in 1941.During Japanese rule Kelantan was placed under Thailand.

Kelantan became part of Federation of Malaya in 1948
