LINCOLN, NEW MEXICO
The murder of John Tunstall was followed by great bloodshed. At one point, the Murphy-Dolan sharpshooters took aim from the rifle ports of the Torreon pictured below. The Torreon was one of Lincoln's earliest structures. Built in the 1850's, its thick walls protected Spanish-Americans against the Apaches. But, in the Lincoln County War, the Torreon was pivotal in the shooting of Americans by other Americans.
The McSween house was burned to the ground during the war and Mac was killed, but the Dolan house survives to this day. The house was built in 1888 by J. J. Dolan. It served in later times as a hotel.
