Almost everybody said that we were very brave (while thinking we were stupid :-)) to do a bicycle tour of Africa. We didn't want to hang around bus or train stations or worry about our vehicle falling apart. The other option was an "Overlander" which is not a great way to see the real Africa. We wanted to see the African way of life at a leisurely pace, go where and when we wanted and spend sometime by ourselves. By bicycle we got to see all the tourist spots, the rural communities and see/hear/feel many things you can't when bouncing along in a vehicle. The rural people were friendly and curious and having a laugh since most of the time we were a welcome diversion from their normal existance. In the larger towns and cities you get hasseled to buy this or that, go on a safari etc etc and African cities are not the most exciting places. Bicycles are used only by peasants and they seem to respect us for using them instead of the ubiquitous Landrovers. Many times we were embarresed by how much the locals were carrying on their black three speed Chinese machines when we had less than half the stuff and totally superior bikes. Well, enough chit chat for now, I suppose you want to see pictures. Please note that these pictures are not of the best quality and are few in number. The reason being we didn't carry an expensive camera and many times it was not suitable to take pictures. Please Enjoy! Click here to start or Click here to go back to our homepage.
