O'ahu's North Shore is legendary within the world of Surfing. It is the spot of the world's definitive surfing competitions and is the home of many of surfing's greatest legends. The North Shore is a collection of several beaches spanning the Northern coastline of O'ahu's North Shore, primarily threw the town of Sunset Beach. Among these beaches Sunset, the Banzai Pipeline, 'Ehukai Beach and Velzyland.
These beaches are popular surf spots for visitors and locals alike.
Also, do not leave any valuables in your car or be seen placing any in your trunks. Thefts are very common anywhere, Hawai'i is no exception. Also, parking is scarce at most of these beaches. You'll be having to pull over on the side of the road in some cases to get parking. Be cautious in all circumstances.
If you're driving out of Waikiki to the North Shore you need to get onto the H-1 West. Stay on H-1 West in your right hand lane and take the H-2 cut off. Stay on H-2 and it will eventually merge into Kam. Highway. Stay on Kam Highway pass Waimea Bay, pass Shark's Cove. Eventually you'll be in Sunset Beach and a majority of these beaches will be visible on your left. If you want to get to the Banzai Pipeline you can only access it off a side road on Kamehameha Highway.
If you're taking the bus, you need to get back to Ala Moana by catching the #8, 19 or 20 or 47. Transfer to the #52 Wahiawa Circle Island Bus. Ask the driver to let you off at the beach of your choice.
