Located on O'ahu's eastern shore, Sandy Beach is undoubtedly one of O'ahu's most popular surf spots. This beach is popular among the surfing community and is crowded daily with adventurous waveriders.
One word of caution for novice surfers though...
Sandy's is notorious for a shallow break on its shore. Numerous inexperienced surfers have broken their necks and been killed by landing badly on the shore break. Cross markers and other memorials along the beach will attest to this.
Overall, if you're looking for some great waves close to town, then Sandy's is the place for you.
If you're driving out of Waikiki to Sandy Beach get on the H-1 East. Stay on the H-1 East as it will eventually merge into Kalaniana'ole Highway. Stay in the right hand lane. Passing Hanauma Bay, you'll eventually see Sandy Beach on your right. Take a right into the parking lot.
If you're taking the bus, you can catch the #22 (Beach Bus) directly to Sandy Beach. You may also take the #58 (Hawai'i Kai/Sea Life Park) bus, however, you will have to get off at the corner of Kealahou and Kalaniana'ole and walk into Sandy Beach.
