East Honolulu is known as the more "affluent" area of O'ahu. It is home to the towns of Kahala, 'Aina Hina, Niu Valley and Hawai'i Kai. Kahala is home of the O'ahu's super wealthy. The area is full of luxurious homes and mansions costing well into the million dollar range. It is known as the "Beverly Hills" of O'ahu.
'Aina Hina is built upon the hills overlooking Kalaniana'ole Highway. Niu Valley and Hawai'i Kai are also areas with distinctly more affluent looking neighborhoods. The drive out to this side of the island is very picturesque with Maunalua Bay on your right hand side and the homes of 'Aina Hina on the mountains above. The neigborhoods of Hawai'i Kai are something to see as you drive through, a majority of the homes very impressive.
If you're driving out of Waikiki to East Honolulu you simply need to hop onto the H-1 East bound. It will eventually empty out onto Kalaniana'ole Hghwy.
If you're taking the bus, you can catch the #1 route. The #1 Kahala will take you only as far as Kahala. To get to 'Aina Hina or Hawai'i Kai you need to read the sign on the bus. It will indicate how far that particular #1 will take you.
