The 'Ewa Districts of O'ahu have strong roots in Hawai'i's plantation heritage. The 'Ewa district is comprised of the towns of Waipahu, 'Ewa Beach, Kapolei and Makakilo. Waipahu and 'Ewa Beach are plantation towns that specialized in sugarcane production. Both towns are centers of O'ahu's Filipino population. Located in the old section of Waipahu is Hawai'i's Plantation Village, a museum and monument to Hawai'i's plantation history. The village contains maintained plantation homes, bungalows and portraits of plantation workers. If you want to get a true feel for old plantation Hawai'i you might
definitely consider stopping off at the Hawai'i Plantation Village in
Waipahu. It is located at 94-695 Waipahu St.The phone number is 677-0110. The Plantation Village is open M-F from 9am till 3pm and on Saturdays from 10am till 3pm. You can visit their website at: http://alaike.lcc.hawaii.edu/openstudio/hpv

Within the past decade Kapolei was designated to be O'ahu's "2nd City." In the past several years thousands of homes have been built on the 'Ewa plains, slowly transforming to former canefields into what will be the city of Kapolei. The biggest development to date was the building of the Kapolei 16-plex of Theatres. Currently more construction projects are underway including construction of a Middle School, a High School, and a library. Business offices are also being underway. Eventually, the State plans to have the second O'ahu campus of the University of Hawai'i built at Kapolei as well.
To Waipahu:If you're driving out of Waikiki to Waipahu, Ewa and Kapolei you need to get onto the H-1 West bound. Stay in your left hand lane on H-1. To get to Waipahu you'll see the Waipahu cut off and your right hand side. It'll take about 30 minutes to get to Waipahu.
To Ewa Beach:If you're continuing on to Ewa Beach stay on the H-1 pass the Waipahu cut off. You'll soon see the Ewa cut off a few miles down the road on your right hand side. Take the cut off and it'll wrap around to Fort Weaver Road which shoots straight into Ewa Beach.
To Kapolei:If you're going to Kapolei continue on H-1 West pass the Ewa Beach cut off. Kapolei and Makakilo are 5 more minutes down the road. You'll travel through a desert looking area for a few miles until you see the Kapolei/Makakilo cut off on your right. The cut-off goes up a hill. When you reach the top of the cut-off take the left hand lane which will turn down to Kapolei. If you take the right you'll go up to Makakilo.
If you're taking the bus to the 'Ewa side you need to get back to Ala Moana and transfer to an 'Ewa bound bus. To get back to Ala Moana take the #8, 19, 20 or 47.
To get to Waipahu transfer onto any of the following routes, #48, 49, 50, 51. These routes will only take you on Farrington Highway. To go through the town you need to take the #47. You could actually take the #47 directly out of Waikiki on Kuhio Avenue.
To get to Ewa Beach transfer onto the #49.
To get to Makakilo take the #50
To get to Kapolei take the #51 and get off either at the Kapolei Shopping Center or the Theatres.
