The Wai'anae Coast sits along the Leeward side of the island. The district includes the towns of Nanakuli, Ma'ili, Wai'anae and Makaha. The district is one of the major centers of the Hawaiian population on the island. Nanakuli and Wai'anae are two places on the island designated as Homestead Land.
A prime agricultural area there are numerous farms in the valleys. Fishing is another popular activity on the Coast. As a result on the roadsides you'll regularly see roadside vendors selling things such as fish, fruits and home baked bread.
The Wai'anae Coast is also known for its many beaches, both family beaches and surf spots. Makaha Beach is one of the top surfing spots on the island. Ma'ili Beach Park is another popular family beach on the island. During Holidays and long weekends it is a popular camping spot. Wai'anae's Pokai Bay has also been a long time island favorite family beach because of its safe waters.
While in Wai'anae one place you may want to check out is Uncle Lani's Hawaiian Poi Mochi shop located at the Wai'anae Mall. Poi Mochi is a rare, only in Hawai'i snack that is an island favorite. Uncle Lani's shop also serves other favorite island snacks such as Shave Ice, saimin and other assorted goodies. |
If you're driving out of Waikiki to the Wai'anae Coast you need to get onto the H-1 West bound. Stay in your left hand lane and it'll take you directly the Wai'anae Coast. The drive will take approximately one hour depending on traffic conditions. The H-1 West will eventually empty out onto Farrington Highway which is the only road in and out of the Wai'anae Coast.
If you're taking the bus, you can catch the catch the #51 Makaha from Ala Moana. To return to Ala Moana board either the #8, 19, 20 or 47 on Kuhio Avenue and transfer onto the #51 from there.
