On December 7, 1941 the Japanese attacked and bombed Pearl Harbor, plunging the United States into World War II. Thousands of U.S. sailors were killed during the attack. One of the first ships to go down in the attack was the U.S.S Arizona. In 1961 the Arizona Memorial was erected.
Today, a memorial to the Arizona stands in the middle of Pearl Harbor over the spot where the ship sank. Visitors are ferried out to the memorial from the Arizona Memorial WWII.
Also at sits the Bowfin WWII Submarine Park. During WWII the Bowfin and other submarines contributed greatly to the US war efforts, destroying over half of the enemy ships. Today the Bowfin sits in Pearl Harbor open to the public for tours.
Another landmark at Pearl Harbor is the historic battleship Missouri which recently came to Hawai'i. It was upon the decks of Mighty Mo that the Japanese signed the peace treaty that ended WWII. Today Mighty Mo is displayed as museum with daily tours for visitors.
The memorial/museum annually has thousands of visitors and is one of Hawai'i's top attractions. The museum and memorial stand today as a living testament to one of the darkest chapters in American History.
