World famous Diamond Head has long been a definitive land mark for Hawai'i. The Hawaiian's called this volcano by two names, Le'ahi and Kaimana Hila. When the whites landed on O'ahu they coined the name Diamond Head for this peak because it is shaped somewhat like a Diamond. Now this extinct volcano is one of the world's most recognizable and well known landmarks. Each day tourists and other visitors make the daily hiking tour up the stairs to the top of the crater. Diamond Head Crater hike is open daily from 6am to 6pm.
If you're driving out of Waikiki to Diamond Head Crater simply follow Diamond Head bound on Kalakaua until it merges with Montsarrat. Follow Montsarrat until you see a turn off labeled "Diamond Head State Monument." You should see a tunnel which will lead you to the parking lot.
