[AUSTRALIA]
Well, I thought that as I’d been to quite a few places overseas I might just include a little bit on my own country. This will be something of a tourist leaflet I’m sure, and experiences are not the same as when in you’re in a strange country on your own.
VICTORIA
Melbourne
So I’ll start by saying if you’re from Sydney or Adelaide you’ll hate Melbourne as apparently it’s a rule. But both cities are pretty neat and have their own attraction. Melbourne is a lot of suburbs with a pretty small CBD – the suburbs stretch forever. But there’s plenty of fun and frivolities to be had. The tallest building is the Rialto (which has the compulsory observation deck), there are many many pubs, clubs and bars to service your night time needs.
The MCG is one of the most amazing sports arenas in the world. It seats nearly 100,000 people and features concerts, australian rules football, cricket and even the occasional soccer or rugby match. As long as there’s a decent crowd there, you’ll have a pretty good time.
Travel around on the much criticized public transport system – trams, buses and trains. They get you most places you want to go, just not in a hurry. (trams in particular)
There’s a great museum, (well a few)
Outside Melbourne
In Victoria there are some excellent get away points. The twelve apostles, which live of the Great Ocean Road, are small chunks of land not far from the coast, and quite amazing – one of the most visited sites in Victoria. Nearby is a tiny island that used to be linked to the land via a non-manmade bridge, but that collapsed a few years ago. The bridge used to be called ‘London Bridge’.
When coming to Australia you’ll most likely want to see some of our cuddly wildlife. One of the best places for that in the whole country is without a doubt the Healesville Animal Sanctuary, around an hour and a quarter from Melbourne. It’s a little expensive, but you can see all your favourite Australian animals, from Koalas, Kangaroos, Wallabies to the platypus and wombat.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Adelaide
The capital of South Australia, Adelaide is a fantastic, relaxing easy going city. There is a fantastic arts festival held there every second year around febuary – march which has world-wide acclaim. The beaches and indeed complete area of Glenelg are alive through the summer, as is the Magic Mountain – water slides that are truly ace (?). There are miles of suburbs and only a small but mostly pleasant city centre which is quite easy to cover by foot, and if you’re looking for a pub Adelaide is the place to be. You’d just better not be a Victorian. (or mention football)
