THE UAS NEWS

UPDATED ON 7/27/00

A couple of updates:

- PHIL finished business school and got a job in Austin!

- news from Flavia!

- GARTH GOT MARRIED!

PHIL GOT A JOB

yes as incredible as it sounds, I've finally decided on a job.

I will be staying here in Austin, working for Tivoli Systems, a unit, albeit
reluctantly, of IBM.  Its a really interesting job, with an equally
interesting job title: Technical Evangelist.  As far as I've been able to
figure out, its kind of a jack of all trades - a little bit of marketing,
sales, technical development, training and research -- perfect for me,
nobody will know what the hell I'm REALLY doing...

I will be travelling some for work, so don't be surprised if I show up at
your door one of these days... and I hope I will get to see some of you here
in Austin... I am looking for a place that will have very comfortable guest
ammenities so you'll have no excuse not to visit, except maybe the hot
summers, but that's what Barton Springs and Travis Lake are for!

For now, my new email will be pfritz@tivoli.com, I'll send out another
message when I settle in my new place.  In the meantime, only six more weeks
of school left...!

Cheers,

UPDATE FROM FLAVIA!
Hello, Mike ! Hello, everybody !

I just spent more than an hour reading all messages and seeing all pictures.
Mike, you are great (and so is the Internet too) ! You were always the one
to answer the famous question "What we are gonna do tonight ?". Now the
question you answer is "How is everybody?".

As for me, I am happily married with Renato. In September we will celebrate
our 6th wedding (=living together) anniversary and 10 years that we know
each other. We just bought a 3 bedroom apartment in Botafogo (near the Sugar
Loaf in Rio de Janeiro) and now we feel we can think about kids. Here goes
my new address:

Rua Lauro Muller, 128 / 902 - Botafogo
cep: 22290-170 - Rio de Janeiro - RJ - Brazil
Phone: (55-21) 542-1185   Work: (55-21) 574-1623
work e-mail: perezf@nabisco.com.br

Kiko, my brother, is still living in São Paulo with Patricia, his wife since
1997. He moved there for professional reasons (he works for Nestle as
product manager for baby food). For those of you who knew the crazy Kiko at
UAS, forget it ! He is a different person. I would call him a workaholic
that loves to stay at home, rest and watch a soccer game on TV.

Marcio, my younger brother is at college (he wants to be a phisiotherapist)
and all he does is party.

Luciana, my sister, will turn 19 in two weeks. She is very beautiful and
returned from Japan one month ago whrer she stayed for 6 months modelling.
Will I have a Gisele Bundchen in the family ?

At work, I am still responsible for the export/import area of Nabisco in
Brazil, but God knows until when. Nabisco has been bought by Kraft (Phillip
Morris´s food segment) 2 weeks ago and many changes are to come.
Kraft-Nabisco will be the second biggest food company in the world (behind
Nestle). Meanwhile, I am doing my job, getting to know people and learning
new things because this is what I like to do.

My message to some of you:
Alex and Paula: congratulations on the new pregnancy. Wish you the best !
Shlomit: your daugher looks just like you and has a big smile. Cute, cute,
cute !
Carolina: I loved seeing you. I ended up returning to Buenos Aires but had
no opportunity to see you again. Good news: I tried to cook the fish you
taught me how and the result was not bad. Thanks ! And send us new about the
new baby !
Shana: you could really write a book on your life. Go ahead !
Cristina and João: we live in the same city and just get to know about each
other through Michael. Isn´t that weird ? Anyway, my home number is (21)
542-1185 and work number is (21) 574-1623
Shelley: I was looking at old pictures the other day and found out a picture
of you having a laugh-attack at our house in Carrasco. Do you remeber that ?
I could never forget. That is the image I have of you.
Andrea: tentei chamar você para meu aniversário, mas não consegui. Você
mudou de telefone ? Vou te mandar um e-mail. Quero te achar !

Many kisses to all of you.

Flávia Coutinho

ALEX BERTI TO MOVE AND BE A DAD AGAIN!!

Here's a letter from his wife, Paula

Hello everyone,

OK, I think that I have everybody's address at this point, at least I hope so.
I have, once again good news, at least they are for us.

Alex and I sold our house back in October with the idea of moving south.  Far
south, to Miami or around that area.  Until now Alex hadn't found a job so we
had to relocate within the area till something came up.  Honestly it was a bad
time to look for a job right before the "big Y2K", but...  We left on vacation
late December and I came back late January.  Alex had come back a few days
before and had called me with the news of two possible very interesting
positions, one was in White Plains, NY and another in Miami.  Both very
interesting as a career point of view, but White Plains wasn't quite Miami...
Finally, last week he got a very good offer for the position in Miami and we are
going!!!!

The company is called Dalloz Safety.  A French company direct competitor of
Uvex-Bacou group were he used to work.  He will start next week with training
and then leave for a week vacation in Italy (they couldn't do it the other way
around but it works) and on March 13 he will start full time.  Bruno is going
with him and I'll stay here (by the way let me tell you that Bruno is doing
wonderful and crawling all over the house!).

In the mean time, I am finishing my masters, so I have to stay here till May.
We hope to arrange with Dalloz to work from here for a couple of months
otherwise, he will move first and I'll follow as soon as I can, no later than
May.  With all the changes, our e-mail address is also going to change.  For now
we have the yahoo address that is easy access.  It is losberti@yahoo.com and it
will always be there, so if you want, change your address book.

Now that you know all the news about Alex, I think you should know the rest of
the news.  I don't want it to happened again, so Mel, don't worry, you wont bump
into me in the mall the day I'm due without even knowing that I'm pregnant.  I'm
telling you right now.  We are expecting our second little one!!! I am only 3
1/2 months and I'm due towards the end of August.  I'm going to have a "fun"
summer in Florida...  Alex doesn't want to know if it will be boy or girl, but I
do, so as soon as I know I'll pass it along.

I guess this is the end for now.  I promise I will keep you informed of our new
address and phone number in Florida.  And remember that just as we said in our
wedding "Mi casa es tu casa", so if at any point you are in the Miami area, stop
by or even count with a place to sleep (if you can put up with 2 little ones!)

Please send our best wishes to all of your families and keep in touch!!!!!

Paula, Alex, Bruno and ???? (we are thinking of Rupertino if it's a boy or
Mermelada if it's a girl.  Just kidding!!!)

PICTURES & A LETTER FROM ALEX BERTI ('88) & PAULA'S BABY BOY!!!  BRUNO BERTI:

Bruno was born on 4/22/99 and weighed 3.5 kilos!!  I had the great fortune of seeing him right before his 1 week anniversary and he is VERY VERY cute!! Here are a couple of pictures to prove it:

YET ANOTHER UAS'er TRACKED DOWN: Silvana Medina('90) Here's a recent picture that was taken down in Florida! She's in Fort Lauderdale (I think)...

SHELLEY STUART RE-DISCOVERED!

Many of you already got this, but here is the news from Shelley:

Ok. First, I just want to say thanks to the Internet- without it I would not have been able to find any of you. (I wonder how many of these messages I will get back.) Also, thanks to Natalie Rathauser. She was the easiest person to find. THe rest of you are all hidden very well in EVERY search engine. (Ok- I wasn't smart enough to look up UAS.)

Where do I begin? Hmmm... Ok. I am cured. No, wait. I wasn't sick. Um, wow. What do you say after you haven't talked in so many years?

I have a feeling this is going to be a long read so you better get a drink, or something. Here goes...

Well, after leaving Uruguay on that misty, overcast morning (that was so sad) I returned to Southern Illinois and moved in with Grandma. I finished H.S (1989) with honors (of course) and tried to figure out the "what's next" dilemma. I partied all summer with all my friends in my Dad's old house. (Dad was divorced by now and living in Chicago.) I went to Spain and somehow ran into Mike and Martin. Too weird!

Upon return to So. IL, my Dad decided I needed to move to Chicago and either go to school or get a job. I got a job--several of them. :-) I stayed there for a couple years and got bored. Mom (you've never met) was in So. Illinois begging me to go to college at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. I thought about it and packed my stuff, enrolled and started classes that summer (June 1991.)

College was great! I had so much fun. I learned some stuff, but I was having so much fun I decided to stay there for five years. I was in the Marching Band, Public Relations clubs, photography clubs, a sorority (professional/music) and a few other organizations. School was great. Check out the website sometime: http://www.siu.edu

Anyway, I graduated in May 1996. My lease wasn't up until August so I took a couple more summer classes (to keep my campus job). I met my boyfriend, John, that summer. We had been working together for two years, but never really hung out.  Summer at the SIU campus is the best time to hang out. There's free outdoor concerts and tons of outdoor activities. It's really a great place. Anyway, one drunken night he asked me if I wanted to drive cross-country. Well, duh! Of course, I did. I had the perfect car for it and everything, a 1969 Camaro Convertible. I am sure some of you remember me talking about that car. (I still have it, btw.) So, we sold everything we owned and bought a tent. We camped at the local campground for a week before we went anywhere. John has a big Chow chow dog named Roger-he went, too. While planning this great trip, I talked to my Dad, who by this time was retired and living in Bay Minette, AL. He invited us to come visit him. We did. We liked it so much there that we stayed for about a year.

In November of 1997, we moved to the beach. We worked everywhere. Everything from cleaning condos to waitressing to landscape to retail. It was really rough. We were both way too proud to do that stuff. That's the breaks when you have a liberal arts degree. LOL! :-)

I finally got a great job at the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention & Visitors Bureau! Now, my job is promoting this great place where I live. Living and working on the beach! I love it! Orange Beach, AL is a small coastal community with about 2,000 full-time residents. During the summer months, there are anywhere from 8,000 to 35,000 people here. It gets pretty crazy. I love it, though. Sure,  there are some downsides to living here-the greatest being hurricanes. Remember Georges last summer? That got us pretty bad. This summer has been okay, though. Anyway, my job is cool. I am the Communications Coordinator. I am responsible for our monthly newsletter, our website: http://www.gulfshores.com/ managing our database, some photography, and get this, I am believed to be a computer guru. I don't know how that started. OH, well. Anyway, as you can imagine I stay pretty busy.

So, there's my story. I know it's not all that glorious, but I have had fun and that's really all that matters. I hope this email reaches everybody. I can't wait to hear from you all. Tell me what's happening!  I am going to scan and email a bunch of pics from when I was at UAS. I noticed there weren't that many from 87-88. I miss you all.

Take care and write soon. I will include my phone number, but the best way to reach me is via email.
Here's all my info:

GREETINGS FROM MARC MARQUEZ ('89) IN D.C.

Hi Michael, My sister Laura just got back from Montevideo recently and forwarded me the website with email addresses for UAS folks.  I wanted to write you to see how things are.  Are you still in California?  Are you still on work Visa? How much longer are you here for?  Are you coming back out this way? Things are well over on my end.  I am working for AmeriCorps here in DC (the domestic Peace Corps) and living with my girlfriend Janice.  We have been together 3 years - it's hard to believe it's been that long.  I'm in school part time and otherwise just generally hanging out. Please write when you get a chance.  I'd like to reconnect with you, as things are in a much better place than when we last spoke. Hope and trust all is well with you. Regards, MARC

MMarquez@cns.gov

JOAO BARBOSA:

Here is the news I got from Joao Barbosa!

Michael,

How are you? How is every thing going? How did you find my sister?

Here in "Brasil" every thing is going fine.  What I am doing is not
exactly a Fast Food restaurant.  I graduated as a Metal Engineer after
beginning with Chemical Engineering.  When I graduated I went straight to a
Commercial Bank where I used to lend money to large corporations.  After
two years at Itaú Bank, I decided that financial market was not exactly
what I was planning for my life and I decided to run my own business.

A friend of mine (that I met at the Bank) and I openned a consultancy
company on export and import.  We spent one year and a half hitting our
heads around when we finally began working as the import department of
company in Rio de Janeiro that is responsible for the distribution for the
food and disposable products for a fast food chain in Brasil called Bob's
(like McDonald's but not so big).

One of the directors for this company decided to leave the company and
called me and my partner to open "Fast & Food".  We are distributors of
food products, cleaning products and disposable products (cups, straws
etc).  We act basically with fast food chains where we centralize the
buyings and take care of all logistics and distribuition all over Brasil.

We began this company about two years ago and thanks god we are doing fine
so far.  I am resposible for the administrative and financial departments.
I am the one who takes care of the lack of money.

We are making a home page for "Fast & Food" and as soon as we have it on
air, I will let you know so you can understand a little bit more of what I
am doing.

Man, it was very nice hearing from you and let's keep contact.  If you
ever come to Brasil, please let me know.

	My best regards,

	João Barbosa

ILAN BAREL GETS A NEW JOB AND A NEW FIANCEE!

Hey buddy,  really think about you from time to time (para no exagerar).  I finally got into the yahoo email and read your updates.  This month has been hectic and even now I just have a few minutes.  I have many news for you.  The first one is that I'm getting married.  The wedding will be at 90% (deal not closed yet) on Feb. 23rd and if you have some extra change it's a great excuse to come over.  The wedding is really going to be awesome with many young people and good music and food (for free !!!).  I'd love to see you (obviously) but I know you've just been here and just started a new job.
I quit my drumming for a sack of money at Clud Kasparov, a new and exciting internet site which will air in December and will be the major chess site in the world.  My email is ilan@chessdev.com
Please respond so I know that you received this email.  Obviously I'm still playing drums and might go into a second band ( a very good one) but economically I had to move to this new job where I get a really good car, salary and stocks.

Please write me something so that  we can start emailing a bit from this address.  Un abrazo.  Ilan

A New Note from Flavia Perez Coutinho Shmekel ('90):

Micosito,

Sorry for the late reply, but it has been really crazy down here. I wanted to call you on your birthday, but I had no phone number to try to reach you...

I am glad to know that you now have a job and a home. How is everything in your new activity ? Have you been going to the beach often ?

This year for me has been of work, work and work. As you know, since dec/98 I am working for Fleischmann Royal Nabisco and they are trying to do all projects they have not done in the last 60 years in one year only. It is crazy. I worked last Saturday and will work next Saturday, just as an example. Thank God Renato travelled to Salvador for the week, because I would not be able to be much with him anyway... I like what I am doing, I am also learning a lot, but I sometimes think : what is the use of such a hurry ? what am I doing it all for ? I have not enough time for my family and friends ! I try to balance and do everything but it is definetely tiring !

Besides work, Renato and I are looking for an apartment to buy. We still live on rent, but we feel it is time to have our own place where you can do what you want without worrying if what you do will be left for the owner. Apartments are very expensive in the areas we are looking for (Lagoa, Leblon, Ipanema). An OK 3-bedroom apartment is about US$ 200 k !

Since I had to go to São Paulo to work this Saturday, I spent Sunday with Kiko and Patricia. They are doing fine, but Kiko is becoming a stressed Nestle product manager. The stress comes not only from his job, but also from living in São Paulo. Of course.

My mom and dad are also doing fine. Luciana will go back to Japan next Jan/00 for probably another 6 months of modeling there. Marcio is the typical college guy - lots of girls and beer.

I will try to call you one these days (still for your birthday !). When is the best time ?

A big kiss and take care.

Flávia

THE LIFE OF SHANA:

Here's  an e-mail that I just received from Shana.  Check out her website listed below as well!

When we last left our heroine, Shana, she was almost 20 years old and
returning to her dinky, not-quite-Ivy-League-yet-outrageously-expensive
liberal arts college in Maine.  Here are some tales the weird and wild
hijinks that ensued.
1990: the year Ben became my best friend, I discovered my strange
affinity for gay men (you can call me a "fag hag". I gravitate towards
gay bosom buddies and my gaydar is amazing).  I start hanging out in a
theatrical crowd.
1991: inevitable college politicization, I join DSA, I'm all about the
environment, I stop shaving legs and pits. Took classes with names like
"Black women in the Americas" and "Sexuality and the Politics of
Difference".   Attempt, unsuccessfully, to becme a vegetarian. I shave
my head, and though I am a hairy yet hairless freak, manage to have my
longest relationship to date (7 whole months, guys) and one of my worst.
I march on Washington, D.C. (or was that 1990? I marched a ton in
college).  In the summer, I march in NYC gay pride and date a chick for
a whole month.  I visit Santa Fe for the first time.  I coedit school
literary magazine, do Outing Club and GLBA.
1992: Graduate from college.  I was going to write my thesis on
menstrual images in literature, but ended up with one on vegetarianism
in feminist and lesbian-feminist utopian novels. Trip to Europe.  Work
on a farm for the 2nd time (still thinking myself all environmental and
close to the earth, but really lazy with the work ethic of a slug).
Return from Europe without plans or goals, short visit to sister in N.M.
turns long term.  Relationship with sister very stressful (she wants to
be good big sister, but I'm killing time with her, her girlfriend and
menagerie in 1-bedroom apt. Among other travesties, she kicks me out on
my ass)
.
1992-present: A blur.  A squandered decade.  I get tattooed 3 times.  I
get a few more ear piercings (currently, 5 holes).  I drink a lot and
(finally, I'm ancient to start) have brief experimentation with
mind-altering substances.   I work at Wild Oats--natural foods store the
size of a supermarket--for SEVEN YEARS. (What the hell am I thinking?  I
know what my parents are thinking--we spent thousands of dollars on your
education for this?)  High point--front end supervisor (I've since
stepped down).  Whine a lot about wanting to write.  I watch a lot of
movies and listen to some offbeat music and have a boyfriend (briefly)
named Dooley.  I discover I attract derelicts and freaks and
co-dependents.  I move like 4 times in 2 years but then discover the
benefits of flying solo (at my current address, 4 years).  I travel
around--drive to Miami, Austin, Telluride, fly to New Orleans, N.C.,
Atlanta, San Francisco, Vegas.  I get 2 cats. I read and knit a lot.
Somewhere in this period, I rediscover the razor (I'm pit and leg hair
free for over 3 years!).  I discover vibrators.  I vote Green but I'm
mostly apolitical (not really following the news at all).  Oh, hey,
point of pride: my writing was published twice in the local rag this
year!  I won lst prize for writing a story about playing Monopoly on an
artfully arranged Monopoly board.

I guess that sums up major trends.  At least now, if I talk to you guys,
we can skip the boring preliminaries on my side.  This is, by the way,
the short version (I'm still really good at making a long story longer).

So now tell me, what're your stories?

Shana

Ariela Waniel Got Married!
Yes, Ariela got marrield last year (September I believe) with a guy called Ariel!  They met at the university in Beer Sheva where they were both completing their Masters in Psychology.  Ariela is now pursuing her PhD in Psychology and her husband (who I have not met) is completing some sort of clinical psychology residency.

I heard that Ariela's wedding was really marvelous, and am slowly getting over the fact that I was not invited. (Just kidding, Ariela, you saved me on the gift purchases).

Galit Kessous gets her Masters in Finance
Galit is the same as always. Happily married to Alon, and recently moved to a new apartment.  She just completed a masters in Finance, which included a month of training in New York (although she never called me from New York...) and is now thinking about possibly working at a bank after november when her curtrent contact finishes.

Garth Atchley to Get Married
Yes, it is contagious!  Garth will be getting married next summer!  Here's a picture of him and his fiancee at Martin's wedding.  Congratulations!

Paul Ellison is getting Married!
Dave Ellison tells me that Paul is somewhere in Florida, and getting married in November (if memory serves me right).

A Letter from Cristina Rebello: Bia is a mother!
Dear Michael,

I was really happy to hear from you and get news about UAS people. It's been so long that I don't know exactly what I have told you about, so I'll just tell you about the whole family.

My sister Bia has a boy named Rafael, who's almost two years old. I'm sending you a picture of them together. She  moved with her
husband Claudio and Rafael to Angra dos Reis at the beginning of this year, so we miss them a lot. The good thing is that they're only 2
hours away and often come home on weekends. They were here today for Father's Day. They are really happy there, for it's a small town
and life is much quieter and easier than in Rio. It's also good for the baby because they live in a big house and he has plenty of space to
play. But I really hope they come back soon.   My "little" sister is already 20, and studies business, and works on that too. She's quite lucky because she got a nice job here in Ipanema,  where is also her college, and where we live. It's only 5 minutes from one to the other.
My parents are doing fine, you can imagine that now their big love is the grand-son. They go to Angra very often to see their baby for they  can't stay too long without him.

As for myself, I am working at a graphic design studio and also have my own design clients. That gets me pretty busy, for I work all day and do my own projects at night and on weekends. But I am really happy with both. The place where I work is small, as most graphic design studios in Rio, but we do really nice projects that I really enjoy working on.

I went to NY for New Year 98 and met Paola and Carolina, who I had never seen again after I left Uruguay in 91. It was great! We spent a
week together and had a chance to "matar saudades". Paola is living in Washington with her parents and her sister is living in NY, where
she has a very nice job. Apart from Paola and your sister I have no news from anyone at UAS, which is terrible because it was a great time we spent there. I hope that now with the Reunion 2000 people will get in touch more. And I also look forward to the updates in your site about UAS, it was really a great idea.  That's about it for now. Hope to get news soon!
Love,
Cristina

Bia and Rafa!                                                                Ma. Claudia, Bia, Rafael, & Cristina!!

Carolina Peri is pregnant again!
Here's the latest letter I have from her!

Thanks for your help! Te cuento del embarazo. Ya estoy entrando en el 4to. mes y la verdad es que está creciendo mucho mi belly. Todo el tiempo tengo ganas de dormir!!!!!! Flia is fine. We went over Dany´s last weekend and it was great. All the kids messing around. We even went to the beach!!! Well, el Campo, you know. Clau moved in by herself! She´s got this job at Invesco and became an independant human being as of last week. She couldn´t be happier. The rest of us are doing OK. Dad is still working in Montevideo and my mom comes and and visits every now and then. Job is fine. I might be moving closer down town in a couple of months. That will be great so I can walk to work and exercise a bit.  (Ha, ha, ha) Did I tell you that Flavia was over? She was on a business trip in BA and came over for dinner. We couldn´t stop talking about school, etc. She looks great! Well, all for now. See ya in Y2K ! Carolina Peri Sector Entrenamiento a Clientes Palestina 977 Tel. 4959-9113   Interno: 9113

Que sorpresa escuchar que havias ido a Costa Rica no sé si te acordas que mis papis viven aí, Es un lugar bastante interesante.  Bueno Miguelito te dejo un gran beso a ti y a tu familia.
Kisses,
Andrea

A note from Pedro Cardoso:
You might know by now that my parents are living in Montevideo again, that your dad looked them up and that they had dinner last weekend.  Small world, right?  So that´s how I got your email address. It´s been a while, but it seems we always end up catching up with each
other.

I´m still a diplomat, like the last time we spoke.  I haven´t received any outside posts, but that should take a few more years.  Which is fine by me because I enjoy living here.  I did do an internship in Quito, which lasted for 3 months and was a great experience.  The work was fun and varied, and I got to climb some volcanos.

Anyway, my work now is really interesting.  I deal with the more general, political aspects of Brasil´s relations with southeast asia and oceania.
Which means I get to set up state visits, write reports, letters, etc. and do a lot of research. Let me know how you´re getting along in California.
Abraço,

Pedro
