This movie is comprised of three elements combined together. The final piece will consist of a triptych. |
The Hatai project will combine the disparate forms of Turkish traditional decorative art, and digital media art. Hatai is of the main motifs of Tezhip (illumination) and stylized form of a flower can be its vertical angle or bird's eye view. Their designs are not naturalistic and they were arranged on a field according to certain rules. Much Islamic art emphasises geometrical patterns inspired by nature, but it does not imitate it. Representational images in Islamic art do not even use traditional ideas of perspective that dominated Western art. I would like to convert these patterns to create a kaleidoscopic effect. The aim of my project is to make traditional illumination relevant for today. To do this, I would like to use media technology (Photoshop, After Effect, Final Cut Pro) to create a new form of illumination and see them in a new dimension. If I am able to create my project in a two dimensional animation, it will show Islamic non-representation art as representational. It is very likely that it will be first of its kind. In addition it may be valuable in my own culture. If I can put them in a different environment, which has not been used for these motifs, maybe they can be more visible than before. I hope to make audience adore these images as I have for the last five years. My challenge is make technology support the traditional art. However good, presentation of art depends on the technology around it. We can harness the benefits of the potential of traditional arts, and consider how these can move into the digital world. I realised I was going to break the Hatai into pieces and put them together for another purpose, a process of defragmentation. I found that this process of defragmentation and re-assembly is common in new media forms, often as sampling, reproducing and remixing existing images.
