Falling off the sky tower?(Auckland)

On February 22nd in 1997, I was at Kansai Airport waiting for a flight to New Zealand. I had got a scholarship to study at Christchurch Polytechnic for 1 year as an exchange student from my university. It was the first opportunity for me to live in a foreign country for more than a month, but I didn't feel nervous or anxious at all. The airplane left the airport and that was the beggining of my great year!!

It was a great experience spending a year in New Zealand. New Zealand is a country with lots of nature. I enjoyed bush walking, rafting, playing touch rugby and heaps of outdoor sports. Meeting people in NZ made my life in NZ much more valuable. I'm really happy to have such great friends. Before I left NZ, my flatmates gave me a white teddy bear to get everyone's messages on it and now it looks like a black bear (with lots of words)!!

Bars in CHCH

I liked NZ bars a lot. The best thing is that going out for a drink in NZ is much cheaper than in Japan.

In Christchurch, there are lots of nice bars. I'd like to recommend some of the bars.

  • Dux de Lux -- My favourite bar near the Arts Centre. They have their own home brew beers. ("Blue Duck" is the best.) There are tables outside and it's just so great having some drinks and food outside on a sunny day. There are some bands playing every weekend. The atmosphere is very good, but it closes at 12 o'clock which is a bit early.

  • Coyotes/All Bar One--They're really popular. On the weekend, there are always long queues in front of these two bars until 1 or 2 am.

  • Espresso 124--On Oxford Tce, near the Bridge of Remembrance. If you have a chance to go to the bar, try a cocktail called "tutti frutti"! It's worth trying!!

  • Bar, isn't it?--This is a branch of "Bar, isn't it?" in Japan. You can try Japanese Sake there.
