Entry for September 24, 2006
During a film festival in Birmingham I was walking from one venue to another and I walked through a park where there were many homeless people hanging out. I hate to admit it, but it did make me very uncomfortable and I found myself avoiding that park on the way back to that venue so that I wouldn't have to confront my discomfort. I have some sympathy for the homeless, I don't believe they should be locked up just to make people like myself more comfortable, but then when they congretate in fairly significant numbers, it does have an adverse affect on area they are in. It could be that the homeless tend to not stray too far from the agencies or organizations that serve the homeless thereby, these organizations, while having a noble purpose, are creating another problem for an urban area that is already in decline and trying to make a comeback. Do I have an answer to the problem? It will require more thought on my part to even come up with some suggestions.
