Personal Skills | ||||
Creative Thinker | I have many interests in my life outside work, including creative writing and independent travel. These areas are essential to my working life as they help me keep an open mind and to see problems from more abstract angles.
Team Player | Having worked on several team projects I understand the value of co-ordinated teamwork. I have also worked on solo projects as a consultant.
Fast Learner | My work within a small company (Sinara) has frequently required the ability to learn and adapt to new technologies in short periods of time. My solid education base in a core range of technical and management techniques has supplied me with many skills, which I am able to apply to new situations.
Employment History | ||||
October 2000 - Present Day Currently I am working as an external consultant for Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO). My role is to carry out a complete review of their recruitment programme for IT volunteers, and to help them implement change where necessary. This is a voluntary position. During the past few months I have secured job offers with two companies, as a Technical Consultant, and a Senior Technical Engineer. Unfortunately due to financial circumstances, neither have been able to honour these offers.
September 1996 – July 1998 July 1999-September 2000 Roles taken Project Manager Systems Design Consultant Software Engineer Sinara Consultants is a small software consultancy based in the City of London. It offers programming, design and consultancy services to clients from financial and e-commerce sectors. For my first two years with the company I worked mainly in programming roles. Following that I took a one year break to travel and work abroad. From 1999-2000 I worked at Sinara managing project teams varying in size between 2 and 5 people. eBusiness I have worked with several eBusiness companies, including QXL.com and other smaller internet start-ups. Whilst my work has been mainly concerned with design and development issues, I have also worked as a consultant on technical and strategic issues for some smaller dot-com companies. Projects Automated Email Notification system. The client, an eCommerce company with a very large user-base had problems with their current customer Email system. They had no version control for Email templates, and editing or creation of these was a complicated process, which could only be carried out by their DBA. They required a new system to allow templates to be edited in several different languages, whilst maintaining version control with differing security levels, from all of their pan-European offices. I worked with the client on a functional specification. I then translated these requirements into a design which I managed the implementation of with the development team. I followed the project lifecycle right through to delivery and client acceptance. The software package was released in a form that could be easily installed in multiple locations. The software was written in C++ Builder, interfaced with an Oracle database, and included integration with PVCS version control. Website Customisation tool for B2B Start-up Company The client required a tool that would allow them to rapidly create customised versions of their website. I worked with their development team, to produce, in a very tight timeframe, a version of their website that could be highly parameterised using data held within their database. This work required knowledge of the capabilities of Javascript and ASP in conjunction with their Oracle database system. Implementing Realtime Financial Datafeed The client, a small data distribution company, wanted to implement a system to deliver financial market data via Satellite to customers in areas where internet connectivity was a problem (specifically the Middle East). I worked as the project manager advising on the many issues of transmitting and maintaining a realtime market datafeed, such as security and data consistency where the feed was sourced from a number of different exchanges.I managed the project from the initial stage where the client had very few ideas beyond that they had identified a need to deliver realtime financial data to the Middle East, through to delivery of the final product. The project took 8 months and I was in charge of a team of 5 developers. As with many projects I have worked on, a high level of client-facing was required, as was the ability was to convey technical concepts to non-technically minded people, often at board level.
December 1998 - March 1999 Full time work within the Facilities Management department of P&O Services in Sydney, Australia. During my time with P&O I took a key role in a project to automate several of their day-to-day client management operations, using an Oracle database with a VB front-end. An important part of this project was liasing with end-users to establish project requirements.
