MCTS has been selected the best transit system in the nation by the American Public Transit Association
(APTA). This will be the second time MCTS will receive APTA's Outstanding Achievement Award.
The first time was in 1987.
This national award is the higest award a transit system can achieve and requires excellence in
operations, administration, customer service and fiscal performance along with innovative programs
witch enhance overall effectiveness and efficiency.
To commemorate this honor, on August 10, 1999, after Milwaukee County Executive Thomas Ament and
MCTS managing Director Tom Kujawa made the announcement, ten MCTS busses, with three Milwaukee
County Sheriff's Department motorcycle escorts and the police escorts took a "Victory Lap" downtown.

In October, Kujawa will accept the award at APTA's annual conference. Kujawa commented, "We are
dedicated to providing excellent bus service to the community. It takes an entire team of
committed employees to achieve this distinction and to continue this high level of service into the future."
MCTS was compared with other transit systems around the country in the areas of operation effectiveness, innovation,
customer service and policy and administration. Examples of the superior record include ridership
growth of approximately 10 percent over the last four years, 626 commendations from the community in
1998 and buses on time more than 96% of the time. Also, the total cost per rider is $1.57 which
is far less than the $2.24 average for transit systems of similar size.
The University of North Carolina recently announced the results of their study in which they found
MCTS to be the fifth most effective transit system in the country. In addition, in 1997 an
independent management peformance audit by Abrams-Cherwony & Associates ranked MCTS an one
of the best managed and operated transit systems in the country.
The Milwaukee County Transit System serves 53.5 million passengers each year and is proud to
provide them the best service in the country.
The Milwaukee County Transit System sets people's lives in motion. It mobilizes those who do not
have access to other modes of transportation and at the same time provides convenient, comfortable
and econmical rides to everyone. It is a great way to travel throughout Milwaukee County.
MCTS is asking all those who are not regulary riding the bus, to participate in Try Transit Week,
Monday, October 11 to Friday, October 15, 1999. Join us during this week by taking a bus to work,
school, shopping or to entertainment.
People are encouraged to help our community and themselves by taking an easy and reliable ride aboard

Also during Try Transit Week you may be honored as one of MCTS's best customers. Each bus operator
will select one passenger who has been an exceptional customer. This person will be given a
postcard to send to MCTS and in return they will receive a free customer appreciation gift
package with special prizes and coupons.

On Sunday, June 13th, the Northway branch of Rt. 35 (35th Street) will return to its former routing
on Edgerton Ave. and 60th St. The Southway (51st St.) branch will continue to use Loomis Rd. between
Edgerton and Grange.
Route 258: Glendale Industrial Park Shuttle
This new route will operate daily in the AM RUSH, PM RUSH, and LATE NIGHT hours with 4 round trips
each. The route travels from Atkinson and Keefe, north along Green Bay, west on Florist, north on
Baker, east on Bender, and south on Green Bay to Keefe. See schedule and map
Route 280: South Milwaukee-Oak Creek Shuttle
Route 280 will operate weekdays in the AM RUSH, PM RUSH, and LATE NIGHT hours with 5 round trips
each. The route will start at MATC South Campus, exit south on Howell, east on Drexell, south on
Chicago, east on American, north on 5th Avenue, west on Dexter, south on 6th Avenue, west on
American, north on Chicago, west on Drexel, north on Howell to MATC, entering via College.
Routh 12 (12th-Wisconsin):
Saturday and Sunday/Holidays trips have been extended from Good Hope to Green Bay & Cherrywood,
(north of Brown Deer near the County Line) via Teutonia and Green Bay. Buses will travel VIA
43rd Southbound (Good Hope-43rd-Florist) in the AM, and Northbound (Florist-43rd-Good Hope) in the PM.
Buses will travel VIA Teutonia Northbound in the AM, and Southbound in the PM.
Route 18 (National Avenue):
Buses Weekdays in the AM & PM Rush and at Late Night, and Saturdays in the AM & PM Rush
will be extended from both 108th & Cleveland and 124th & Greenfield to the New Berlin
Industrial Park. To/from 108th & Cleveland buses will travel Cleveland, 166th, Glendale,
170th, Rogers, Moorland, and Greenfield to regular route. To/from 124th & Greenfieled buses
will travel via Greenfield, Moorland, Rogers, 170th, Glendale, 166, and Cleveland to the regular
route.
Routh 28 (108th Street):
Route 28 will now continue south from Beloit Road
to the Whitnall/Hales Corners Park+Ride Lot just south of Layton. Also Rt. 28 will now operate on
weeknights and weekends.
Route 57 (Walnut-Lisbon):
Route 57 now operates with 2 branches northwest of 60th Street. One is the brach to 92nd &
Grantosa (no changes). The other continues northwest on Lisbon to Capitol (replacing the Rt.
60 Lisbon branch) then west to 124th. Buses will
operate every other bus on each branch at most times (see schedule).
Route 58 (Green Bay-Villard):
Weekday Rt. 58 buses now travel to the downtown Amtrak station. Buses travel southbound
via Keefe, 8th, 6th, Michigan, 5th, and St. Paul. Northbound buses travel via St. Paul,
4th, Clybourn, 6th, and 7th. Weekend service still ends at Atkinson & Villard.
Route 60 (Burleigh Street):
The Rt. 60 Lisbon branch is now operated by Rt. 57.
Daily service is now opreating to 124th & Townsend with every other bus operating to Mayfair,
and the others opering to 124th at most times.
Route 68 (Port Washington Road):
Rt. 68 now operates an improved schedule on saturdays, operates on saturday nights and on sunday/holidays.
Route 3 (Bluemound Express): Service ended (see Route 10)
Route 10 (humboldt-Wisconsin): Route 10 has been modified to accommodate former Route 3 riders. Route 10
westbound service will be moved from Wells to Wisconsin. Also, Route 10 will operate
Express in both directions between 12th & 45th Streets stopping only at 12th, 16th, 22nd,
27th, 35th, 37th, and 45th Streets. Route 10 stops at Brookfield Square Mall but not at the
Brookfield Square Park & Ride Lot which is within walking distance.
Route 30 (Sherman-Wisconsin): Route 30 service on Wisconsin and Prospect Avenues between
Jackson St. & Ogden Ave. will be eliminated; Rt. 30 will operate north on Van Buren St.
and south on Jackson, between Ogden and Wisconsin, for all trips.
Route 35 (35th Street): The Southway (51st) branch of Route 35 will now stay on Loomis
Rd. between Edgerton and Grange Avenues. The Southway (51st) branch will no longer operate on 51st st. between Loomis Rd.
and Grange Ave. Route 35 will continue to operate on 51st St. South of Grange.
Route 80 (6th Street): Special trips have been added to Route 80 on weekdays. These trips will
continue from M.A.T.C. South Campus south along Howell to Rawson, west on Rawson to 6th, and north
on 6th to UPS. These trips will not travel to Woodcreek & Puetz. Present service to Woodcreek
& Puetz will be maintained.
Effective August 31, 1998 the Route 10 zone fare went
into effect. A 25 cent zone fare is added when traveling west of 124th St. The zone charge is
to be paid when boarding eastbound, and leaving Westbound.
