GENERAL COTTAGE INFORMATION


Should you decide to rent our cottage, we hope that your stay will be an enjoyable one and you will come back again. There are only two rules we insist on: "feel free to use whatever you find, however, please replace it and leave the cottage the way you found it AND please DO NOT smoke inside the cottage!"

The cottage is a cedar sided, 1400 S.F. Viceroy-style summer home, directly located on 150' of North Channel (Lake Huron) water frontage with the following features:

CHECK-IN, CHECK-OUT AND DEPOSITS ARE:

  • Rental periods are from Saturday 1:00 p.m. to Saturday 11:00 a.m. A deposit of $100.00/week is due to confirm a reservation.

  • The full rental is payable four weeks in advance of the reserved time. The deposit is refundable if cancellation is made 90 days in advance.

    ON ARRIVAL:

    Inspect for any damages and report it to us immediately by calling 519-758-5265 or cell phone 519-717-5200.

    ON DEPARTURE:

  • Please leave the cottage clean as you found it. Report any problems or damage to us as soon as possible.

    Please dispose of garbage. The dump schedules are listed on the notice board and there are dumpsters located at the marina and along the town docks. Make sure all doors and windows are closed and locked.

    DINING OUT:

    There are many good dining spots on Manitoulin. Some spots we recommend include:

    *Garden Gate Family Restaurant in Tehkummah is an excellent modest price and charming country bistro in a country garden setting.

    *Gary's Restaurant in Little Current has good home cooking at moderate prices also.

    *Rock Garden Terrace - Mindemoya, area has good meals.

    *Farqhuar's Dairy Bar (near swing bridge in Little Current or in Mindemoya) is a MUST visit for fantastic scooped ice cream.

    For a more complete list, refer to a local newspaper or the "local information centre" in Little Current.

    RECREATION ACTIVITIES:

    GOLF There are four courses within 45 minutes of the cottage:

    *Mindemoya, which is 20 minutes from the cottage.

    *Gore Bay, which is 30 minutes from the cottage.

    *Manitowaning/Wikwemikong, 60 minutes (new course)

    *Espanola, which is 40 minutes from the cottage.

    SIGHT SEEING & FISHING CHARTERS for a reasonable and enjoyable fishing or sightseeing charter on the North Channel see

    HORSEBACK RIDING There is a riding stable at Silver Birches Resort, three miles west of the cottage.

    HIKING Cup & Saucer (3 miles west of the cottage) is an excellent hiking and sight seeing trail.

    SIGHTSEEING Some of the more popular spots include Bridal Veil Falls in Kagawong, where you can go under a small falls and hike along the river. The Bluffs of Gore Bay offer an excellent view of the harbour.

    ARTS AND CRAFTS West Bay, which is 15 minutes west of the cottage is the centre for Indian Crafts and paintings. The Ojibwa Cultural Foundation, Kasheese Studio and the doors of the round Catholic Church in West Bay are worth a visit. There are many other Galleries in Little Current, Kagawong and Perivale that have local works of art.

    MUSEUMS There are a number of pioneer museums in Gore Bay, Manitowaning, and Sheguiandah.

    MEDICAL FACILITIES:

    There is an excellent hospital/medical clinic in Little Current that offers emergency treatment.

    BANKING FACILITIES:

    There is a Toronto Dominion bank and a Bank of Montreal, both with banking machines, in Little Current.

    SHOPPING:

    Groceries and baking at GG'S Groceries or Value Mart are available on the hill at Highway #6 or an excellent Grocery Store in Mindemoya.

    Beer & Liquor The Brewers Retail is below the hill on Highway #6 as you enter Little Current from across the bridge. The Liquor Store is on the Hill, going down to the business section of Little Current.

    Fresh & Smoke Fish is available from local markets in Little Current. Look for signs located at the west hwy 540 entrance to town. There is also fresh fish available in the Farquhar's Dairy parking lot in Mindemoya on Friday mornings.

    GETTING THERE:

    OPTION A - DRIVING FROM SOUTHERN ONTARIO

    Take highway #400 (which turns into #69) north to highway #17. At the Sudbury - Sault St. Marie interchange, take #17 West.

    After about 40 minutes you will come to McKerrow where you will turn south on highway #6 (Espanola - Manitoulin cut-off). Drive 30 minutes until you reach Little Current.

    Turn left on Highway #540 heading towards Gore Bay. Sixteen kilometers (10 miles) from Little Current, on a long straight section of highway, there will be a green sign with "BAYSHORE ROAD" on the right side of the road. Turn down the gravel road and keep left. We are nearly at the end of the road at #318 and marked by a green rural mailbox with the names LOCKYER & NICOL on it. Turn down our entrance.

    OPTION B - DRIVE & FERRY ROUTE FROM SOUTHERN ONTARIO

    Take highway # 6 to Tobermory where you will take ONR's ChiChiMaun Ferry for an hour and 45 minute Ferry ride. Reservations are recommended or arrive at least an hour or more in advance of the sailing.

    After leaving the Ferry, keep on highway #6 until you pass Manitowaning. Approximately 3 miles past Manitowaning, you will come to a sharp bend in the highway, turn left on BIDWELL ROAD (There will be a number of resort signs such as Red Lodge, Holiday Haven marking the road). Follow Bidwell Road (always keeping left>until you reach highway #540. This is approximately 30 miles of winding road. Always keep left.

    When you get to Highway #540, turn right, heading towards Little Current. It is approximately 5 miles to get to the cottage turn off. You will know you are close when you go down a steep hill (fantastic view of lake & mountains), make a sharp turn in the road and come to a long straight stretch (we are approximately 2 miles past the sharp turn). Turn left at Bayshore Road. If you come at night, the sign is a reflector type to signal the turn off. Go to #318 Bayshore Road
