A trip to Christiansø starts in Gudhjem. The small ferry "Ertholm" is about 1 hour and 15 min. to do the job. The "Chimera" is sailing as well. From Svaneke the daily post is sailed by "Peter" all the year round.
If you come to Bornholm on a sailboat you must not forget to visit Christiansø. Many sailors love to spend a day or two here. The harbor is safe and nice.
The approximately 110 inhabitants love to see people on their lovely island, but they have a life here, and try to imagine how you would react if a bus full of noisy people was dumpt in your garden? Therefore i ask you to behave yourself and do not enter private ground.
To have a look all the way round, enter the lighthouse inside the remnants of Store Tårn. From here you can also see the island Græsholm who is a bird protection area, and no visitors allowed.
This picture is taken on the island Frederiksø. It is smaller and with very little growth. You can walk around the two islands in half an hour.
"Lille Tårn" on Fredriksø is not a Church as you may think if you have seen the Round Churches on Bornholm. It is for firing guns at the enemy.
But today it is a museum for all kind of interesting things from the past. Here you can see some of the canons who defended the islands. They were in use at one battle against the British navy in 1808. One soldiers wife was killed and the British were beaten off.
A nice place to take your picnic is here by the Churchyard. You will not see a cat or a dog on the islands. No cars either only a small tractor for taking goods to the store and the hotel.
The soldiers in the old days were keen growing vegetables. They gather earth to there small gardens. It is told that some even is sailed from Bornholm.
This series of pictures are showing the nice hot summertime. But remember that a wintersday with gals and frost there is also people here. Then it can be a depressing experience. No cultural activities other than what they can do for them selfs. But no stress and smog.
Once this was the prison for Dc. Jacob Dampe. An intellectual that agitated for democracy in Denmark. The local "Devils Island" it was. He sat here from 1826 to 1841.
