Gudhjem

Gudhjem, the tourist's favorit.

Salene Bay On the east cost lies the rocky hill "Bokul" with the town Gudhjem. The town seems to cling to the sea side of the hill.
The name "Gudhjem" means "Gods home". That is a little exaggeration, but it is a nice place.
Bokul There are two harbors and it is the whole meaning of the town. One harbor is open in almost any weather. It is an old town and once it had "town-rights". But the plague came to town and the population was reduced badly, so the remnants sold their rights to Svaneke for a barrel of beer.
On this picture is Nørresand Harbor.
Bokul On this view from the top of "Bokul" you can see the harbor and the church.
Brøddegade The street from the harbor to the main road on top of the hill is rather steep. That is on of the things that makes this town special.
Fig-tree Another thing is that the climate at this particular place is more mild than other places. The town is sheltered from the usual western wind and it makes it possible to grove exotic plants like this fig-tree.
Old house There are not much space for gardening so people use the available space to grove flowers and other plants. The houses are mainly small and old, but they are well kept.
Gudhjem Church The church is not very old as so many others on Bornholm. There was a small chapel "Saint Annas Chapel" but it was to small and much repair was needed, so it was demolished. Some parts of it still stand so the size can be seen.
Gudhjem Harbor This view of the harbor is from the footpath from the Church to the harbor. The inner parts of the harbor can be closed by a door to make the water still in bad wether. For many who visit Bornholm with a sailboat, a day or two in Gudhjem is a must, and sometimes the harbor is very crowded.
Chimera The "Chimera" is an excursion boat. By that you can make a trip to "Ertholmene" or as someone says "Christiansø". It is some small Danish islands an hour and a half away from Bornholm in direction NW. from Gudhjem. It is a very special place and i have made a side on that subject. Try to find it on the map or use this link. Ertholmene
Klippan In Gudhjem there are many boarding-houses an hotels. "Pension Klippen" is one of them.
View from Bridge The view from Bokul over the red roofs of Gudhjem has inspired a number of the most beloved Danish painters. Olaf Rude, Leergård and Oluf Høst is just some of the many artists who liked Gudhjem. Oluf Høst has got his own museum in his home "Norresăn" by the harbor of the same name. Visit the museums web-site on Oluf Home 2
Hether Heather is common on Bornholm and on Bokul in particular. This year it was rich blooming because of all the rain we have had. 1998 will most likely be the most rainy year in 150 years.
Melstedgaard "Melstedgård" is a museum for farming and the living on a farm in about 1850. The farm is built from 1796 and the next 50 years. The buildings where schedule a historical monument in 1950 and the museum started in 1982. The garden and the fields near the farmhouse is like they were in 1850.
