Nexø

Nexø, the fishing town.

Nexø is the greatest fishing town on Bornholm. The harbor is not nearly as big as Rønne harbor, but many fishing vessels come here with their catch, not only Danish but from all the Baltic nations. Many fisher’s from abroad have their ships repaired here, because the yard is very good.
The ships yard have a smart system for taking the ships on land. It works on air pressure, and on land the ships are moved on air cushions.
It is not all the foreign ships that looks as nice as this. The Russian and Polish ships that are not owned by the crew, often look rather rusty and poor.
This is my good friend Fritz and his Ship “Marlene”. He is one of the locals, and as so many others he have had a hard time the last 3 or 4 years because of quota’s and low prices on the fish. But now it seems to be better.
There are many small houses in Nexø. It goes well with the modern lifestyle where young people marry late and the many elderly people who is single. Rønne and Nexø was heavily bombed in the last days of W.W 2. The rebuilding of the town followed the street-plans of old times. It has resulted in a somewhat crowded and narrow town.
This is a former machine shop that I have taken part in the rebuilding of. Both the yellow and the red house belong to the project. It is separated into 6 independent apartments.
The courtyard is joined. Now it looks a bit naked, but in a couple of years it will be a nice garden with trees and flowers. By this project the whole street has become a nicer place to live and a plain spot removed.
This sight looks like somewhere in Sweden. No place in Denmark is like this, apart from Rønne. This is thanks to our god neighbors the Swedish people. After the great bombardment in 1945 when a great part of Nexø and Rønne was damaged, the Swedish state donated 300 god houses to be build on Bornholm.
It is unusual to see wooden houses in Denmark. The people who owns them are very pleased with them. 75 of the houses are in Nexø and 225 in Rønne. This was a fine gift from a nation that in history has been taken extort contributions from the town.
Stenbrudsgården is also rebuild recently. It was the managers residence of the Kgl. Frederics Stenbrud. (Royal Frederics Stone quarry). Today it is the place of Bornholms Science Center.
Baltic Bridge is an organization for developing god relations to the 3 former Soviet provinces known as the Baltic states. Lithuania is 1 of them and a sign of our restarted relations can be seen here. This is a result of the visit of 6 wood artist in 1997. It is an example of a half heathen and half Christian art of making woodpoles.
The 6 beautiful artworks is placed on the area by the coast where all the rubble from the bombardment in 45 were placed. It is as if they were coming up from the sea and greeting us.
