Østerlars church is the largest of the 4 round churches of Bornholm. It is a unik type of church rarely seen elsewere. It's been build about 1150 as a defensive position as well. The vikings did not only plunder the British Isles and Rusia. They took what whas not well defendet. | |
Later it was people from the south side of the Baltic See who plundered here. Today they come as tourists. | |
The curch is 17 meters in diameter and is 3 storeyed. Access to the upper floors is by a narow staircase in the thick wall of granite boulder. | |
The buttresses is addet later when the walls began to lean becaus of the huge weight. The conical roof is also added later. | |
In the hollow center pier there is a baptismal chapel. 6 romanesque arches is the access. | |
The altar is from 1605 and a restoration in 1965 is made. The painting is new and by the lokal artist Poul Høm. It shows Jesus whit the bread and the wine. | |
All around the center pier is a great fresco painting. It is made in the late 1300's, and are the most important in danish medieval painting. | |

In the porch is placed 2 runic stones. The smallest is showen here. It is from 1100 and it says: For Sigmund by his 2 sons. Christ help the soul and Saint Michael and Saint Mary. | |
