The coastline on the east side of the island, is rocky and low. It is a beautiful place, and the road from Nexø, on the south-east corner, to Sandvig in the north, is the Danish answer to Cote d'Azur in the Mediterranean. It is mostly placed near the coast and runs trough a number of the small and pretty villages that i find, the most valuable treasure that we have. The picture is from the harbor in Listed.
An island give the seafarer a place to seek shelter from a storm, because there will always be a leeward cost. The ships on the photo takes a rest in the stormy wether of a rare summer storm by Årsdale. It is a usual sight because the sea around Bornholm is intensely trafficked.
A silent day at Ypnasted, a "secret" place that not many tourists know. There are 5 houses and the people who owns them, love the place passionate. Under world war 2, many people who want to fled the country, made the trip to Sweden by a small boat from here. The shipping route was never detected by the German forces on the island.
This is one of the houses in Ypnasted. It is typical for a fisherman's house from around 1880, with its simple half-timbering and white-wash. On top of the thatched roof is a "husbrand", a carved price of wood. That is some detail special for houses on Bornholm.
On this picture from a rainy day in Svaneke is 2 things to notice. The first is one of the smoke-houses that can be seen all around the coast of Bornholm. There where more than 40 in the small town of Svaneke. Nowadays only a few is smoking herring, and many are been pulled down. The second thing to notice is the redoubt whit an old canon. That is a part of the defence system that has been in use in our wars whit Sweden and later the British navy.
When a seafarer is to take reckoning of where he is, landmarks is in good use. Windmills and towers have been used as landmarks for decades. In Svaneke there are an old watertower made for both water and landmark. It is drawn by the famous architect Jørn Utzon, known for the Sidney Opera.
Vigehavn is a small natural harbor in Svaneke. It is a quiet and nice place to have a small boat. Fishing is very popular by the locals, and it is easy to catch as much as a big family can eat.
One of the most fascinating things about the sea is that it is ever changing. The time of day, the wind, and time of year are the factors that make the sea look different from one moment to the other. This picture is taken late at evening in the midsummer.
This garden belongs to an artist named Anders Nyborg. He spent the winter months on the island of Majorca in the Mediterranean Sea. The summer is the time for Bornholm and the long evenings. By midsummer the night is short and it is not really dark. I love the summer.
The sea is not calm all the time. As you can see on this rock on the rocky beach north of Årsdale, the water grind a stone until it is round allover.
The small harbor of Årsdale in a strong wind. This is the normal in the autumn and winter time. It is a fresh experience to walk along the coast in a strong wind. The noise and the sight of the big waves crushing on the rocks is spectacular. You have to be warm clad. But when you come home in a warm and nice living-room, with a hot cup of coffee, you feel refreshed.
This is a day in the spring on Bølshavn harbor. The calm sea is blue and with white splashes on the rocks. The boats are in the water and we are facing a long and hopefully warm summer. That is the best part of Bornholm from my point of view. |
